If you are a Mac user, you will receive a notification tomorrow about a ready-to-install update to El Capitan, full of small but important innovations. In anticipation of this event, I will talk about how to prepare your computer for the update, what to look for and what will be new as a result in the latest version of the OS.

An important event for Mac owners and fans will take place on September 30th., presented back at WWDC and having already gone through four iterations of public beta testing, will finally get to Apple computers.

Getting ready for the update

It is worth starting with the fact that the update, as it was already with Mavericks and Yosemite, will be free, and the list of supported devices is identical to the current version of OS X. For users who will be updating from previous releases, let me remind you that this is:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid / Late 2007 and newer)
  • Xserve (early 2009);
  • MacBook (Late 2008 aluminum, Early 2009 and newer)

Also, if you are still using Snow Leopard, please note that the update requires at least version 10.6.8. OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite users will be able to upgrade from any zip version. Owners of older OS versions will need to update Snow Leopard first.

To find out what version of OS you have, click on the Apple logo in the upper right corner and select About This Mac. If you have Yosemite, along with the version you will see the year of the computer's release, if it is earlier, you will find this information by clicking on the "Details" button.

Now about free space. The company does not mention this requirement, but it costs at least 8 GB of available internal storage space in case of an upgrade from OS X Yosemite. It is also worth noting the need for 2 GB of installed RAM. You can check the compliance of your computer with the requirements in the corresponding subsections of the same "About This Mac" tab.

Be sure to make a backup before updating in case something goes wrong. Ideally, this is a backup of all Time Machine contents, but if you do not have an external drive for this purpose, then at least a copy of important data in iCloud. You don't want to lose all important information, do you?

What is remarkable about the update

Immediately a small spoiler. If I was asked whether it is worth upgrading to El Capitan, I would immediately answer: "Of course it is." Given the tradition of free updates over the past few years and continuous performance improvements, they certainly won't be superfluous for any Mac owner.

We tweaked the little details of the flat design concept introduced in Yosemite, refined system applications, increased productivity and made multitasking truly convenient thanks to Split View.

El Capitan is a logical continuation and improvement of the current Yosemite. And Apple knowingly gave it the name of one of the mountains in Yosemite National Park. It is definitely worth updating.
