What to do if the DNS server is not responding

Several ways to deal with one of the most common network problems.

Follow these steps one by one. If the steps taken did not help, go to the next method.

1. Restart your computer. A one-stop solution to all problems that is worth trying first.

2. If the Internet is connected via a router, check if there is a connection on other devices. No connection everywhere? Reboot your router. To do this, unplug the power cord and wait about a minute. Then turn on the device again and check if the internet has appeared.

3. Sometimes a firewall can cause problems. Disable it and see if the problem goes away. Click Start → Settings → Updates and Security → Windows Security → Firewall and Network Protection, select the active profile and turn the switch to Off.

4. Try to open the page in another browser. This can sometimes help. Also, it doesn't hurt to clear your browser cache.

5. Clear your browser's DNS cache. To do this, open the following service pages in the address bar and click the clear button on them:

• Google Chrome: chrome: // net-internals / # dns
• Yandex. Browser: browser: // net-internals / # dns
• Opera: opera: // net-internals / # dns

In Firefox, you need to press Ctrl + Shift + Del, uncheck everything except "Cash", and click OK.

6. Try to disable your antivirus.

7. Perform a network reset. To do this, click Start → Settings → Network & Internet → Reset Network → Reset Now.

8. Clear the system's DNS cache. Start typing the phrase "command line" in the start menu. Right-click the found "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator". Then execute the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after typing:

ipconfig / flushdns

ipconfig / registerdns

ipconfig / renew

ipconfig / release

Then reboot.

9. Check if the DNS Client service is working properly. Press Win + R and enter services.msc command. Find the DNS Client service and double-click it. In the normal state, it is always running and the system does not allow it to be turned off. But if it is inactive, then the "Run" button will be available. Click it, select the startup type "Automatic", click OK and reboot.

10. Set up automatic DNS server selection. Start typing “control panel” into the Start menu, open the panel. Then click "Network and Internet" → "Network and Sharing Center" → "Change adapter settings". Right-click your connection and click Properties.

Select the line "IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)", click "Properties" again. If you have some kind of DNS server installed there, check the "Obtain DNS server address automatically" option. Click OK, reboot and check if the connection appears.

11. If still not connected, please set up a DNS server from Google on your system. This helps a lot. In the same settings window, activate the option "Use the following DNS server addresses" and enter the following values.

• "Preferred DNS Server": 8.8.8.8
• "Alternative DNS Server": 8.8.4.4

Click OK and reboot.

12. If you have several devices at the same time cannot connect to the Internet due to problems with the DNS server, register the addresses of Google DNS servers immediately in the router settings.

The interface differs from model to model, but most often the corresponding fields can be found in the WAN or Internet section. Enter the following values:

• "Preferred DNS Server": 8.8.8.8
• "Alternative DNS Server": 8.8.4.4

Save the settings and reboot the router.

13. Perform a clean boot to Windows. Helps if problems appeared after some update or installation of new programs.

14. If all else fails, call your ISP's technical support.
