According to recent studies, women smile more often than men and tend to be open about positive emotions.

Nevertheless, scientists believe that smiling and other manifestations of a good mood are only part of the picture. In addition to positive emotions, there are others, such as fear, anger, disappointment, surprise, satisfaction, pride.

To identify the differences in facial expressions of men and women, scientists have developed a methodology for assessing it based on reactions to various emotional stimuli. More than 2,000 people from five countries took part in the study. They were shown advertisements for famous products. The subjects watched videos on their computers. At the same time, they knew that they were being filmed through a webcam, so the scientists chose only those people who did not hesitate to show their emotions on camera.

To assess facial expressions, the researchers used an automated facial coding system. It correlates facial expression with the movement of certain facial muscles. With its help, scientists analyzed the frequency of manifestation of various expressions and their duration.

It turned out that when watching ads, women smiled more often and longer than men. They also raised their eyebrows more often, although the duration of this movement was the same in both sexes. Given that raised eyebrows most often signify fear and sadness, women openly express both positive and negative emotions. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to show anger. They wrinkle the forehead more often and keep the corners of the lips down for longer.

Scientists have found that women are more inclined to express happiness and sadness, while men are more inclined to express anger. Therefore, the statement that women are more emotional than men is erroneous. It's just that each gender tends to show different emotions. But the question still remains open whether this is the reason that women and men experience these emotions to varying degrees.
