In a cluttered, unclean kitchen, we consume nearly double the calories of Clutter, Chaos, and Overconsumption, according to researchers at Cornell University. …

Scientists conducted an experiment by dividing the participants into two groups. First, the first group was asked to describe the period in their lives when they felt confident, and the second - the period when they felt that life was out of control. Then half of the participants were left to wait in the dirty kitchen, where everything was littered with newspapers and dirty dishes and the phone was constantly ringing. The other half were in a clean kitchen in silence. In both cases, participants could have a bite to eat with sweet cookies, crackers or carrots.

In just 10 minutes, participants recalling stressful situations consumed 53 more calories in a dirty kitchen than those who waited in a clean environment. Plus, they were more likely to reach for cookies.

Chaotic environments, stress, and a sense of helplessness are the enemies of good nutrition.

“In a situation like this, we start thinking, 'If things don't go well, why should I watch myself?'” Says psychologist Lenny Vartanian, lead author of the study.

But the participants who recalled when they felt confident in life, in total, consumed 100 kcal less. This once again confirmed that in a calmer state we are not tempted to overeat. And cleanliness and order in the kitchen will help reduce stress. Cleaning, including washing dishes, helps you immerse yourself in a state of mindfulness.
