Yesterday, the media reported that the special services of some countries found a loophole to access the personal correspondence of users of the Telegram messenger. Therefore, we have prepared some tips to help you protect yourself.
First of all, we want to remind you: Telegram instant messaging service has always had a reputation as one of the most reliable, which allowed it to earn high marks in our recent review of secure chats.
Since the encrypted Telegram protocols cannot be hacked, and the servers of the service are located in safe countries, the special services have come up with an original method to penetrate the accounts of users of interest to them. They simply ask for a new authorization SMS code and then intercept it. Of course, such an operation is impossible without close cooperation with local mobile operators.
However, is it worth grabbing your head and shouting loudly that Telegram can no longer provide the proper level of security?
No, not worth it. In fact, this messenger has everything you need to protect yourself from even such a sophisticated attack. Here is a very simple and straightforward instruction. It is written for the Android client, but you can find exactly the same settings in versions for other platforms.
1. Open the Telegram mobile client. Pull out the panel on the left and tap on the Settings item.
2. On the next page, find the Privacy and Security item.
3. On the Privacy and Security page, we are interested in the Security section. First of all, we touch the Two-Step Verification item and set an additional authorization password. Thanks to this, when activating a new device, you will be asked to enter not only the password sent by SMS, but also the one you just came up with. Of course, no one but you knows him, so any attempt to penetrate your correspondence will be doomed to failure.
4. Now pay attention to the Active Sessions item. With it, you can check all devices connected to your account and remove unnecessary ones. The list contains the name of the client, IP-address, time of the last session. Review this data and remove any devices that you no longer need or for which you cannot identify.
By following these simple steps, you will be sure that no intelligence agency will be able to access your correspondence. And as an additional measure, do not forget to use the secret chats available on Telegram to discuss especially confidential issues.
