Critic Alexei Khromov explains why the sequel was worth 10 years of waiting, but is unlikely to acquire the same cult status.

On October 24, the sequel of the famous comedy horror 2009 "Welcome to Zombieland" will be released on Russian screens. 10 years ago, a film by aspiring director Ruben Fleischer captivated audiences with a witty look at the zombie apocalypse, a striking cast and a very simple story.

And now the long-awaited sequel returns the beloved team to the screens, makes you go back in time for an hour and a half and just perfectly entertains.

The very warm atmosphere

In the first part, the main characters Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) and Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) met by chance on the road, fleeing the zombie invasion. They later met two sisters Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), who first robbed them and fled. But then a warm relationship began between all the heroes.

And if the first part in the framework of the zombie comedy talked about the formation of a new family, then the sequel very wittily reveals the problems that accumulate in close people.

All the heroes live in an empty White House, but Wichita is afraid of being too close to Columbus, and Little Rock is tired of Tallahassee's paternal care. And the sisters run away, as a result of which the youngest disappears with a new boyfriend.

And again a simple, but energetic and funny story is tied: the heroes embark on a search for Little Rock, meeting new acquaintances and, of course, crowds of zombies along the way.

Generally speaking about the plot of "Zombieland" is a useless occupation. The first part fell in love with the audience not at all for the globality of the concept or for some important twists. Style, humor and emotion are more important in these films. After all, the heroes are not so much fighting the walking dead as trying to find their home.

The sequel managed to keep exactly the same mood. Strictly speaking, you don't have to watch the original to love a new tape. Everything is clear from the set. But still, only those who met the characters before will be able to fully feel this atmosphere and understand the references.

The sequel begins with a completely opposite idea. The heroes are already accustomed to living in a zombie world. And stagnation and calmness inevitably leads to conflicts. Now the family needs a shake-up to enter a new stage of the relationship.

But don't think that the writers who were in charge of both the first film and both parts of Deadpool suddenly decided to go into a drama. Signature humor is also in place. Almost any serious skirmish ends up being discharged by a joke, and even the action scenes are filled with funny trash to the eyeballs.

And Woody Harrelson comes off the most, even though he is older than his partners on the site. Tallahassee not only fights and swears, now he also disguises himself as Elvis, dances, sings and talks about his Indian roots.

The rest of the central characters look a little calmer against his background, but the trademark features are in place, and one cannot help but be touched by the eternally sarcastic Wichita next to the timid Columbus. Moreover, in her absence, he manages to do stupid things.

The beautifully pop-up points from the rules of survival, which they still like to quote on the Internet, and even inserts about the best zombie murders, have not gone anywhere. This does not affect the plot at all, it just entertains. Although there are enough other reasons for laughing.

Twice as many … in total

Considering the cult nature of the first film, Ruben Fleischer approached the creation of the sequel in the simplest and most logical way: he took the most successful components and doubled their number.

Did the audience fall in love with the squabbles of the main characters and various road stories? Now the characters are teasing each other incessantly. Did you get the action scenes with zombies as cannon fodder? Now there are even more walking dead, they are more diverse and kill them in the most ingenious ways.

And most importantly, the number of characters has increased. First, old acquaintances meet silly Madison, then very cool Nevada. And then the pair of protagonists literally split into two, creating one of the most comic scenes ever. True, everything could have been a little funnier if it had not been shown in the trailers.

As a result, literally every character gets, if not his own copy, then a mirror image, which gives even more opportunities for a clash of types and jokes. The contrasts are brought out to the fullest: either the stupidest heroine gives out a brilliant business project, then zombies crush historical sights, then the characters compete in the coolness of the list of rules.

Authors sometimes get around the pace of events in a rather strange way. It may seem that the action is stuck and the heroes get stuck in one place for too long. But each such episode is quickly forgotten, because it is soon replaced by a dynamic scene.

Great action

In terms of brawls and gunfights, the new Zombieland may not be a hit like Kingsman: The Secret Service. Nevertheless, Fleischer regularly reminds that he previously shot commercials and videos. Even the first scene of the film touches with grotesque cruelty, backed up by typical slow-mo.

And then the action pleases with a variety. Each encounter with a zombie is filmed in its own way. By the middle of the film, the director pulls out his trump card and reminds that the director of the picture is Jung Jong-hoon, who was standing behind the camera in the original Oldboy.

The authors produce a very long scene without gluing (or, rather, with hidden editing, which does not spoil the perception). It is not as global as the shootout in the church in the already mentioned Kingsman, but pleases with an excellent setting: six characters run through several rooms, and the camera focuses on individual pairs in turn.

Well, the final battle, as mentioned above, copies the first film, only increasing the scope. There will be crowds of zombies, explosions, a huge car and grotesque heroism on the verge of comicism, which will receive the title of “zombie-murder of the century”.

If you try to disassemble the new "Zombieland" seriously, you can find fault with minor inconsistencies and uneven tape tempo. And also to the fact that the authors did not really develop the story. This film is almost the same as the first part: with humor from ten years ago and a very simple story.

But the original was loved precisely for its lightness and lack of any global concept. And the sequel pleases with the opportunity to relax and meet familiar characters who have not even really matured.

Of course, the sequel looks weaker. First of all, because everyone already knows what to expect. He will not surprise with a new approach, he will not repeat the brilliant scene with Bill Murray (he will only make her remember a couple of times), and the new characters will not compare with the old ones.

"Control Shot" is not a new cult, it is just nostalgia. But the way it should be: not tortured, but bright and perky, like a meeting of old and very bored acquaintances. Therefore, the opportunity to return to 2009 at least for a short time is worth seeing a new film. It's easy and witty. Does a zombie comedy need more than that?
