Within any Clubhouse, users are divided into roles. There are three of them: moderator, speaker and listener. As you might guess from the names, moderators act as facilitators and keep order. Speakers speak to the audience, sharing some expert experience. And the listeners, accordingly, will learn something new.

The latter have the simplest role. Enter any room and you will automatically become a listener. Actually, you will not be able to do anything except listen to others. To be able to speak up, you need to be a speaker or moderator.

How to become a speaker at Clubhouse

By default, after entering a room where there are more than several participants, the microphone of any user is muted. To enable it, you need to ask for the floor and wait for the approval of one of the conversation moderators. This is how it is done.

While in the room, click on the hand icon, and then confirm the action by tapping on the Raise hand button.

The room moderators will have a number above the hand and sheet icon. It shows how many people are asking for the floor. By tapping on it, and then clicking on the microphone icon opposite the username, the presenter will allow him to speak. If you click on Edit, you can restrict such requests or disable them completely.

After approval by the moderator, the participant will receive a notification that someone is inviting him to discuss. If you click Join as speaker, the person will change from a listener to a speaker.

From now on, the user's microphone will be active. Typically, after the participant has asked a question, they are brought back to the role of the listener. The always-on microphone privilege is usually reserved for invited speakers only.

How to become a Clubhouse moderator

The presenters have much more rights than the speakers. They are marked with an asterisk next to their name. This role allows users to mute and unmute users' microphones, remove them from rooms, and promote regular attendees to moderators.

The first chat moderator is its creator. It is not marked in any way. The founder can make any user the leader by granting the same rights. In this case, moderators can change the roles of not only ordinary participants, but also each other. For example, it's easy to turn a creator into a listener.

To assign the status of a moderator to someone, you need to hold your finger on the avatar of the desired user and select Make a moderator from the menu that appears. After that, the participant will receive a corresponding notification and an asterisk will be displayed next to his userpic.
