Microsoft has tested four popular browsers to determine which one is less likely to consume battery power in notebook computers. The results are quite interesting.

Many laptop users know that Chrome negatively affects the battery life of the device. Google has already promised to fix this problem, but the updates have not helped yet. Microsoft took advantage of this, conducting a series of curious and quite honest tests to show that its proprietary Edge browser is more efficient on battery power.

We ran two tests to assess the power consumption of Opera, Chrome, Firefox and Edge browsers. The first test was carried out in a laboratory setting. At the same time, a typical user behavior on the Internet was simulated - viewing popular sites according to a predetermined algorithm. In the second test, high-definition streaming video was launched in the browsers. The duration of the laptop was recorded (the experiment involved devices of the same brand and model with the same software) in both cases.

According to this data, the computer's work when watching a video through Google Chrome lasts only 4 hours 19 minutes. The battery lasted for 7 hours and 22 minutes with Microsoft Edge. Firefox and Opera are also outsiders: their power consumption is higher than Edge. These results, with a small difference in numbers, were repeated when modeling typical behavior on the Internet.

To even more accurately prove the energy efficiency of its browser, Microsoft has presented to the public telemetry data from millions of computers on Windows 10 (remember the system tabs with a request to send statistics - we are talking about that). They also confirm that Microsoft Edge and Firefox are the most economical browsers, with Google Chrome performing the worst.

This is a great Microsoft move. Thus, the company is trying to grab a piece of the market for its browser, which clearly lacks functionality in comparison with competitors. As a reminder, there are only a handful of extensions for Edge, and those will become available after the Windows 10 Update Anniversary this summer. So the company is left to develop the energy efficiency of the browser.
