Will absolute computerization lead to global happiness and prosperity? Is it so important to be able to program in the 21st century? Are we exaggerating the importance of the digital revolution while forgetting more important things?
There is a wealth of material on the web about what skills a person will need to be successful in the 2020s and beyond. However, all these lists are made by managers who have successfully learned how to make money out of thin air and other people's labor. Therefore, when it comes to something tangible, everything turns out to be completely different than in fairy tales.
Now we will look at some of the most important skills that will really allow you to stay out of work in difficult times and to be head and shoulders above other candidates.
1. Manual labor
Although more and more attention is paid to work performed using a variety of devices, manual labor is unlikely to ever be completely replaced by robotic ones. This applies to absolutely all industries. Even the most modern aircraft are built by people, and they do it with their own hands. Complex units only help, but do not completely replace manual labor.
Wrapping a nut, replacing the wiring, growing greenery on the windowsill - all this is manual labor, in which even the most modern mechanism cannot replace a person - only help. Even when it comes to the manufacture of complex milled parts or metal welding, a person sometimes works much more accurately due to his own experience. Will this change? No. Computers first have to learn how to make difficult decisions, and this will take more than a dozen years: too complex and unalgorithmic operations are becoming more common.
2. Processing, analysis and application of information
The ability to process a large amount of data is a significant plus. But behind the digital noise, people have forgotten how to perceive information. Okay, I read it - put it in my memory. Just the fact itself, no processing.
Unfortunately, it is not enough to analyze information. You need to understand it, be able to apply it and, in some cases, include intuition. This is what distinguishes us from computers, and it is the intuition of a specialist that is an important thing that cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence.
3. Repair and maintenance of equipment
Even if computers take over the world, someone will have to maintain them. This is a more difficult job than the one already described above. But a little knowledge of programming and working with controllers can really make life easier. You don't need to be able to do it yourself from scratch, but you need to understand where to find the information you need and how to apply it. By and large, a fairly well-mastered school curriculum and several small online courses.
4. Communication skills
Digital communication is gradually replacing personal communication. But it is precisely this that gives the opportunity to show oneself from the best side, to find useful (or just pleasant) acquaintances, to learn something new. The ability to be pleasant in the company, to have strangers towards oneself will never be superseded by any others. A person who can speak beautifully and correctly is always a cut above the rest, even if he has less knowledge. And the ability to argue your position is much more expensive than any Data Science reports.
5. Teamwork and living
The further society goes deeper into the digital jungle, the further apart we are. But modern problems are almost impossible to solve on your own: they are too vast to know everything you need to know. And time is sorely lacking at a frantic modern pace. Therefore, it is very important to be able to gather like-minded people around you, work together and give a common result. This skill is very difficult to develop, but one of the simplest ways is to jointly keep your own home (entrance and area around) clean and comfortable. There are enough problems with housing and communal services, so if it turns out to successfully coexist with neighbors, half the battle is done.
