What is Clubhouse

Clubhouse is a new social network with a feature in voice messages. But unlike other media, voices here are not an additional, but the main and, moreover, the only communication format. They started talking about an unusual social network only in recent weeks, although in fact it appeared back in February 2020.

The Clubhouse is created by Stanford University alumni and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Paul Davidson and Roen Seth. Both have previously worked at Google and have already built apps. The idea of such a social network came from the developers against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic and the need for communication during self-isolation, when people were desperately looking for new ways of communication.

Clubhouse is a panel discussion platform and offers chat rooms of interest. Only without personal messages, photos, videos and memes. A cross between interactive podcasts in real time, conferences with one or more speakers, and conversations at the office cooler, if you like.

What is the secret of the popularity of Clubhouse

Clubhouse's launch coincided with a surge in interest in podcasts and other voice services. But for the most part, the excitement around the social network is due to its exclusivity. It is still in closed access, and you can get there only by invitation from a participant. This has led to the creation of an underground market for Twitter and Twitter invites, where prices start at $ 20 and go up to an unimaginable $ 800.

Developers are also fueling interest by attracting investors, entrepreneurs and celebrities to the platform. Clubhouse is used by Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, Jared Leto and other celebrities. Here you can chat with them by voice, rather than through tweets and comments on YouTube. All this creates a semblance of a closed club, where the members feel like a kind of chosen one.

The Clubhouse concept itself plays an important role. Unlike traditional video communication, visual contact is not required here. You can listen to an interesting discussion and go about your business at the same time.

Another important point and great advantage over text communication is the ability to convey emotions using intonations and accents in the voice.

How to get to the Clubhouse

The app is still in beta testing. Now it is available on the iPhone, but you can only download it - it will not work right away. After installation, you will only be able to reserve a nickname and queue up, waiting for the Clubhouse to open for everyone.

As we have already said, at the moment you can get into the social network only at the invitation of one of the participants. But invites are not endless: initially only two are available, then with active use of the application additional ones will appear.

The easiest way to be on a new social network is to ask a friend to invite you. If there is no one among them with access to the Clubhouse, you can leave a request in one of the Telegram chats, where invites are sent to each other along the chain. After receiving the invitation, you will need to give yours to two other people.

It hardly makes sense to buy invites, so we do not recommend this option. But if you really want to, then at least choose reliable sellers, for example on eBay. There, in which case it will be possible to complain to the administration and return the money.

The invitations are issued to the phone number. After sending the invite, you will receive a message with a link, by clicking on which you can register. The name of the person who gave you access will be displayed on your profile. The same applies to your invitees.

After registration is complete, you will be asked to indicate your interests, and the algorithms will immediately suggest people to follow. The home screen collects the conversations of those you follow and chats based on the interests you marked.

By entering any room, you become a listener. To ask a question or join a discussion, you need to "raise your hand" by pressing the appropriate button. If the moderator approves the request, the microphone will turn on and you can speak.

All registered users can create rooms of three types: anyone can enter open ones, social ones - people you follow, and closed ones - only selected members. The limit for the number of users is 5,000.

If one of your friends started a conversation, you will see it in your feed. You don't need to send any links or invitations like in Zoom. In order not to miss important discussions, there are notifications and a calendar that appears on the home screen.

There is no recording of conferences, all communication takes place in real time, and at the end of the room they disappear. However, you can warn participants in advance about the entry by adding a mark in the description. Otherwise, when you try to enable screen capture, you may get a ban.

Why all this and what is the use of Clubhouse

Oddly enough, Clubhouse has many different uses. This is not only an opportunity to fill the lack of informal communication during a pandemic, but also a way to gain a new audience or expand an existing one. It is also a good chance to make useful contacts by finding people from areas of interest to you.

Clubhouse is good as a platform for educational lectures, experience sharing, conferences, public speaking or real-time interactive podcasts.

Of course, here you can just chat and listen to conversations on topics that are close to you, while you go about your business. Like radio in the car and podcasts while jogging.

What can the future hold for Clubhouse?

The unusual app definitely has potential, so it is doubly interesting how the creators will develop it. They now manage to maintain exclusivity through privacy, but it is unclear if Clubhouse will remain popular after registration opens. With the advent of the Android version, a new wave of users will rush into the service, and due to the rapid increase in the audience, its value may decline.

There is no monetization yet, but it is obvious that it will appear later, when Clubhouse exits the beta stage. This can be an advertisement or a subscription that gives you privileges to create or participate in discussions.

It is highly likely that similar voice conversations will appear on Facebook, Instagram and other social networks and messengers that do not want to give their audience to the new application. It is also possible that Clubhouse will buy Facebook or some other large platform and integrate it into its own product.
