Elementary actions that should not be neglected.
1. Use Windows Defender
If you are not used to working with third-party antiviruses, you should at least use the built-in security tool. It's called Windows Defender or Windows Defender. It does not overload the PC's resources, but at the same time it can save you from many potential threats.
The Defender monitors suspicious changes in system segments in real time, notifying the user about the danger. It will be especially useful when downloading applications and files from questionable sources.
You can activate it through the "Update and Security" section of the settings. In it, you need to go to the item "Windows Security" and click "Open Windows Defender Security Center".
2. Check active browser extensions
The PC browser is the main tool for finding information on the web. Its protection is constantly strengthened by automatic updates. However, extensions installed on top are no less important: they may well become a loophole to your system.
Even if you do not use them, this does not mean that they do not have the rights to connect to installed applications, change privacy settings and other potentially dangerous actions. To eliminate possible risks, make it a habit to regularly check active extensions by disabling or removing unnecessary ones.
In Chrome, you can open the list of extensions through the "Additional Tools" settings item, where you need to select "Extensions". In Firefox and Microsoft Edge, a similar option is found right in the main settings menu.
3. Be careful with your downloads
When using browsers to download applications to your PC, be extremely careful when choosing sources and software itself. Try to use only more or less well-known programs and download them only from official sites or from the Microsoft Store.
It is also important to be extremely careful when activating the installation wizard. Do not rush to constantly click "Next", ignoring help information and descriptions. Often, it is at this stage that you, without knowing it, agree to install additional software that you do not need at all.
At best it will be some kind of useless service, at worst it will be a spyware that will not even remind of itself after installation.
4. Check app permissions
The Windows operating system today allows you to manage the permissions of each installed application. By opening this section in the settings, you can find out if a program is allowed to collect data about your location, or, for example, independently activate your webcam and microphone.
You can check these parameters in the "Privacy" section of the settings, where both general permissions and specific for each individual program are displayed.
5. Set up a custom password
You need to set a password to enter the system even if no one except you uses this computer. After all, there is a risk that someone will try to access the device without your knowledge. This is especially true if you work in a crowded office or use a laptop in a public place.
Some of your colleagues and acquaintances can not only spy on your personal data, but also download it or download dangerous software to your computer. To eliminate all this at once, activate the password entry and automatic blocking when the system is idle.
You can set a password in the settings in the "Accounts" section, where you need to select "Login Options". The quick standby setting is available in the Power Options section. You can go to it through the "Control Panel" by selecting "Hardware and Sound".
