Samsung Galaxy S10 +: general view

The Classic S10 + is available in three color options: Mother of Pearl, Onyx (Black) and Aquamarine. They are all unisex. We got the mother-of-pearl version.

Samsung Galaxy S10 +: back panel
Samsung Galaxy S10 +: back panel

A smartphone in "mother-of-pearl" looks very nice: from a distance it looks white, but close up it looks rather milky. The Samsung lettering on the back merges with the body and is almost invisible.

The S10 + can be fitted with branded silicone or leather cases. We got one of each material. The colors, in my opinion, are not great, but the quality is excellent. Especially for a leather case: it is not only interesting in texture, but also very thin. It's nice when wearing a case does not affect the experience with the device and does not increase its size.

Silicone Case

The three lenses of the main camera are located in the center. The module protrudes slightly from the case. The smartphone does not play when lying on the table, but the platform with the lenses is likely to scratch and lose its presentation faster than the rest of the case.

At the bottom is USB Type-C, the classic headphone jack and speaker vents. On the right is the power button, which is not very easy to reach. On the left is the volume rocker and the Bixby call button, which (hurray!) Can now be reassigned to call any other application after a recent update. Above is a rocker for nanoSIM and microSD.

Samsung Galaxy S10 +: thickness
Samsung Galaxy S10 +: thickness

In terms of dimensions and tactile sensations, the S10 + is similar to the classic flagship phablet from 2019: thin, large, reliable. At first I was a little embarrassed by the small weight for such a size, but this is a matter of habit.

Moisture and dust protection class - IP68. This means that, in theory, a smartphone is not afraid of anything. You can cope with it across the river and photograph the landscapes of the sand dunes.

The S10 + is a modern and technologically advanced phablet, and Samsung has done everything to make it read from afar. For my taste, it is too big, but lovers of the "pluses" will like it.

Screen

I don't want to praise Samsung screens again: they are still, if not the best, then some of the best. But if in the case of the A7 and A9 models I simply had nothing to complain about, then I want to admire the display. Brightness, contrast, color rendition, auto-calibration - everything is fine. A million settings for those dissatisfied with the automation on the spot.

Samsung Galaxy S10 +: screen

Few numbers: screen diagonal - 6.4 inches, resolution - up to 3,040 × 1,440 pixels, brightness - up to 800 nits (that's a lot).

Samsung has reduced blue light emissions, the cold tones of which make it difficult to fall asleep if you use your smartphone before resting. AMOLED is now dynamic - supporting HDR10 + video playback. We will not delve into the algorithms for the operation of different formats, let's just say the most important thing: due to this function, some of the content on YouTube looks more impressive - with a record number of halftones and details for a smartphone display. But this is only a fraction of the content and is usually filmed and published just to show what HDR10 + is. Therefore, there is little benefit from this feature. Rather, it is an investment in the future.

S10 + - frameless with side folds, classic for the series. Occasionally, accidental triggering occurs when the palm touches the right edge. The most noticeable frame here is at the bottom, but it does not affect the operation in any way. The screen is limitless.

The front camera is built directly into the display - an unusual solution, but a good one. This can be used.

This is what the cutout looks like when watching a video in full screen mode.

There is an Always On Display function that displays the time, charge level and other important data. The look of the dial in this mode is customizable.

Sound

At this point, everything is fine again: the sound is loud, clear and detailed. You shouldn't expect any really balanced sound from the small box, but the S10 + does everything it can - usually the lower registers sound less convincing on flagships.

But I have complaints about the AKG headphones: the sound seemed dull to me, and the sagging in the midrange was felt on every second track of my library. Regular "ears" are suitable for hip-hop lovers (they are doing well with bass) and for those who do not bother with musical headphones at all.

The main part of the cord is covered with a cloth winding. Under the right earpiece there is a three-button remote control for controlling the player and answering calls.

Camera

Samsung continues to develop the idea of multi-camera, which appeared with the creation of the Galaxy A series. In the S10 and S10 +, the camera module includes as many as three lenses: wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

The wide-angle serves as the main one: it has a mechanical aperture with values of f / 1, 5 and f / 2, 4, portraits and most of any pictures are taken on it. The ultra-wide angle lens has a 123 ° field of view. It can be used to photograph sights that do not fit into the space of the frame or large groups of people. A 2x optical zoom telephoto lens can help you capture objects that are far away from you.

All three cameras work great even with a lack of light. Here are many examples of photos taken with the rear cameras of the Galaxy S10 +:

All photos were taken in automatic mode. After several days of using the smartphone, I never wanted to turn on the PRO mode. Take a look at the photos taken in Live Focus: the outlines of the subject in focus are neat, and in the stack of portrait effects we found Fade, which makes pretty pictures with black and white backgrounds.

Samsung has improved the camera software. Now the application will tell you if you are about to overwhelm the horizon in the photo, and will optimize the camera settings not only for the lighting level, but also for the specific scenario in the frame space. Bright Night Shot technology will allow you to take pictures without noise in low light. From the subjective disadvantages: self-moji, beautification and other functions remained in place, which, in my opinion, only spoil the picture and overload the application. Too many buttons.

The front camera is also dual, it can take portraits with bokeh and selfies with a resolution of 3 840 × 2 160 pixels. DxOMark has ranked the smartphone's front-facing camera at the top of their rankings, and you can find a bunch of highly artistic selfies taken with the S10 + on the internet.

I never managed to do anything decent in the Live Focus mode, so I am in no hurry to share the enthusiasm of the specialists. But in normal mode, the camera performed well and conveyed everything as it is in detail, coping well with the task even in poor lighting conditions.

Performance

In Russia, the Galaxy S10 + is sold with an eight-nanometer Exynos 9820 processor and 8 GB of RAM. Probably, the American version with a ceramic case, a seven-meter Snapdragon 855 and 12 GB of RAM is even more powerful, but I did not come up with tasks that our S10 + could not cope with or did not cope quickly enough. This is a flagship that pulls and will pull everything in the world for a long time.

Software

The smartphone runs Android 9.0 with One UI add-on. There are tricks here that are familiar to Samsung users, but overall the system is intuitive at a glance.

A swipe from the right edge brings up a customizable application shortcut bar. The complete list of applications at the start includes the necessary utilities, bundles of programs from Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Yandex. The screenshot shows that all standard applications fit on one screen, which is great (we already downloaded the benchmarks and Telegram).

The action panel opens by swiping from above - everything is like everyone else's. Only there are many actions, some of which you are unlikely to even use. And if you use it, you will forget to look for them on this panel.

Bixby scripts are now available - custom macros that can be created from a background study of your behavior, or by you from scratch. These functions need to be tested and customized over time. I cannot claim that this is a cool feature that everyone will definitely use. But the idea is good.

In the Samsung Themes app, you can choose from free or buy wallpapers, icons, Always On Display, or themes that include all of the above. An interesting store for those who like to customize everything for themselves.

Protection

The classic set of authorization methods: fingerprint, face, PIN. There is no iris unlocking, it did not affect the user experience in any way. Before us is the traditional variety of ways to log into the system, it is better to configure everything. Which one is better - I have not decided yet.

Face unlock works smartly even in complete darkness. I am glad that for this Samsung did not need to make a huge edge with sensors.

Fingerprint unlock seems fast, but not lightning fast. This option is justified if you start putting your finger on the sensor when you take your smartphone out of your pocket. For several days, I have not learned to guarantee to find either the exact location of the sensor, or the correct angle of pressing, so about one out of five unlocks did not work for me. I don’t dare to draw conclusions yet.

This type of unlocking has a drawback: most likely, it will stop working after the protective glass has been applied.

Autonomy

The S10 + received a record battery capacity of 4,100 mAh for the models in the line. In a few days of moderate testing, I only discharged it once. I am sure that the smartphone will live up to the evening table, even with the most active use. Talking about some hours on a single charge in the case of the Galaxy S10 + is not very correct: their number may vary depending on the operation of the power saving modes. There are several of them, and they are customizable. And then there is adaptive mode, which learns how you use your smartphone, and manages the shutdown of background processes so that you do not notice anything.

Fast charging adapter included. There are no “tablets” for Qi-charging, but they are supported.

Samsung Galaxy S10 +: wireless charging
Samsung Galaxy S10 +: wireless charging

The highlight of the Galaxy S10 + is reversible charging. This is the name of the ability of a smartphone to share the energy of its battery with another device. I'm not sure if this is really needed, but it's a fact: you can save a friend with 1% charge. Or revive some Qi-enabled accessory.

Outcomes

Samsung's new flagships have an excellent camera, cool stereo sound, just a better screen and even a wagon of less significant advantages and non-obvious chips. It's nice to take the S10 + out of the box and turn it on for the first time - at first I photographed all sorts of nonsense in the office, watched music videos and HDR10 + videos on YouTube, just moved aimlessly across the screen. This is a great gadget - worthy in characteristics, memorable and evokes emotions.

On the other hand, it is one of the most expensive smartphones on the market. Choosing an Android device, you will always find a million alternatives, even from the same Samsung. And here it is already unclear how the flagship should hook so as to pay almost 80 thousand rubles for it.

Supports HDR10 + video that is nowhere to watch. A telephoto lens and an ultra-wide-angle camera, which you can forget about shooting in a couple of weeks. Reverse charging, which we did well without and whose value is questionable. This is not a revolution. Samsung's flagships just got a little newer and better, and the main reason to buy the leading model from the manufacturer is simply the desire to have a premium smartphone without an apple on the back.

Samsung Galaxy S10 + review
Samsung Galaxy S10 + review

S10 + is the older model of the line, which differs from the S10 in screen size, the presence of an additional front lens and battery capacity. This difference is insignificant, therefore, when choosing between the two models, it is more likely to be guided by the dimensions.

The cost of the Galaxy S10 + is 76,990 rubles. The premium version with a ceramic body, 1 TB of built-in and 12 GB of RAM will cost 124,990 rubles.
