But do not rush to write down your acquaintances as gambling addicts - this diagnosis concerns a small number of people with serious disorders.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized excessive addiction to games as a real disease. Now overly active gamers in some countries can receive such a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Gambling addiction (we are not talking about gambling) in the interpretation of WHO is characterized by the following symptoms, which usually go in a certain sequence:
- Violation of the regime due to passion for games.
- Games receive the highest priority in human life, replacing the basic needs of the individual in society.
- Increased dependence on games, despite the negative consequences in a person's life. The individual loses control over his actions, his social position and moral health deteriorates, and he cannot stop playing on his own due to the developed addiction.
The very addiction to video games is determined mainly by the "gambling method". According to WHO, gambling addiction is an addictive disorder and is a prominent and clinically significant syndrome; constitutes an indisposition or interference with a person's personal and social life; develops as a result of repetitive activities not associated with the consumption of addictive substances; includes behavioral disturbances both online and in real life.
Gambling disorder and its symptoms with consequences have already been included in the International Classification of Diseases since June 18, 2018. However, you should not blame all your fellow gamers for gambling addiction. The WHO representatives themselves, in particular Dr. Vladimir Poznyak, note that the prevalence of the disease is extremely low, even among millions of people playing around the world.
