The author of the database is security expert Troy Hunt. He is known as the developer of the Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) hack site. Hunt investigated dozens of password leak and theft cases, collected all these passwords and made them freely available.

HIBP lets you know if an email address has ever been compromised, but does not reveal the password associated with that address. The new database is arranged exactly the opposite: you can search for passwords, but you will not know which mail or username belongs to them.

Hunt advises not to check the password that you are actively using through the new site, as this may be at risk of being stolen. But if you came up with a new password and want to check if it has been hacked before, then the service will help a lot.
