10 best movies based on video games

Warcraft

  • Fantasy, adventure, action.
  • USA, 2016.
  • IMDb: 6, 9.

The film is set in the World of Warcraft universe - rather complex and not too interesting for those who are not familiar with the original game story. Nevertheless, the Russian audience liked the film. In addition, "Warcraft" became the first film, the collection of which crossed the threshold of $ 400 million. For those who are indifferent to the WoW universe, "Warcraft" may seem like a passing fantasy, but those who have a true love for Blizzard's creations were satisfied.

Resident Evil

  • Horror, fantasy, drama, action.
  • Germany, UK, France, USA, 2002.
  • IMDb: 6, 7.

The Resident Evil film series rivals the original franchise in popularity. From the game plot, the films borrowed only the concept of the living dead and the powerful Umbrella corporation. It is noteworthy that the script for the first part was written by one of the most famous modern authors of post-apocalyptic plots, George Romero, but at the last moment they decided to replace him with a younger Paul Anderson.

From 2002 to 2016, six films were released, the best of which, judging by the audience ratings, is still the first. If you love zombie stories and female protagonists in action movies, don't miss it.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

  • Action, fantasy, adventure.
  • USA, 2010.
  • IMDb: 6, 6.

The 2003 adaptation of the game of the same name starring Jake Gyllenhaal received mixed reviews from critics. Those who wanted to see serious drama in Prince of Persia were disappointed. But those who were looking for a light and lively movie for one viewing were satisfied. A separate group is made up of fans of the game, who are jealous of the original plot: not much of it remains in the film.

Prince of Persia is worth watching for its thrilling pursuits, fights, unpretentious humor and excellent cast - attributes that set this rather naive and childish film apart from the galaxy of second-rate video game adaptations.

Silent Hill

  • Thriller, horror, mysticism, drama.
  • Canada, France, Japan, USA, 2006.
  • IMDb: 6, 6.

The adaptation of the first part of Silent Hill is designed not only for fans of the game. This is a decent horror in all respects with its own atmosphere and, what pleases, a minimum of computer graphics. Like the game, this movie scares you not with its screamers, but with its atmosphere and a persistent sense of suspense that accompanies watching the movie.

The scenario of the game has undergone changes here: a woman has become the protagonist, the roles of minor characters have changed and many plot twists. Some of the magic originally put into the game has disappeared, but the result is a classic solid thriller for a couple of views.

Need for Speed: Need for Speed

  • Action, drama, crime.
  • USA, UK, France, Philippines, 2014.
  • IMDb: 6, 5.

The games of the series cannot boast of a well-developed plot: as a rule, it all boils down to the fact that your hero participates in street races, periodically hides from the police, wins, buys and tweaks sports cars. Starting with Underground 2, the developers think over the story and characters, but the plot in them is still for show.

In addition to the title, the film borrowed from the games the very concept of street racing and some difficult circumstances forcing the hero to participate in underground competitions. It stars Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad), Michael Keaton and Rami Malek from Mr. Robot. The movie turned out quite well - at least for fans of all kinds of "Fast and the Furious" and other films "with cars."

last fantasy

  • Cartoon, fantasy, action, melodrama.
  • Japan, USA, 2001.
  • IMDb: 6, 4.

This is not the only attempt to bring Final Fantasy to the screens, but perhaps the most famous. The film is not directly related to any of the games in the series and takes place in a post-apocalyptic future.

This is the first full-length film, all of whose photorealistic characters are modeled using computer animation, a real breakthrough in animation. Despite the fact that 16 years have passed, fans of "Final Fantasy" can be found even now - they celebrate the well-developed script, the beautiful picture and the staginess of the picture.

Angry Birds in the movies

  • Cartoon, comedy, adventure, family cinema.
  • USA, Finland, 2016.
  • IMDb: 6, 3.

Here, the viewer is already waiting for modern graphics and high detail. The original game does not have a story as such, and the cartoon, in the creation of which Rovio (the developer of Angry Birds), took part, explains why birds do not like pigs so much. The cartoon is designed for children of all ages, so it can be watched by the whole family.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

  • Science fiction, thriller.
  • USA, Germany, UK, Japan, 2001.
  • IMDb: 5, 8.

The female incarnation of Indiana Jones - Lara Croft - for many is associated primarily with Angelina Jolie, and only then with the angular figure with exaggerated breasts from the games of the Tomb Raider series. Perhaps one of the weakest jobs in Jolie's filmography, but one of the best video game adaptations.

Both films (the second part came out two years later) now seem naive, but each of them involves a decent cast, which includes Sean Bean, Daniel Craig, Gerard Butler, Til Schweiger and young Jorah Mormont - Ian Glen. If you like Angelina Jolie or adventure films with ancient legends, artifact searches, fights and chases, don't miss it.

Mortal Kombat

  • Fantasy, adventure, action.
  • USA, 1995.
  • IMDb: 5, 8.

Everything related to Mortal Kombat was a cult subject for all children in the 1990s. These are games on Sega and the first computers, magazines with stickers, chips and, of course, films. Johnny Cage, the movie star fighter, has become the hero of a generation. In the second part, the character was no longer there, but the film continued to be watched and revised - after all, this is Mortal Kombat!

If you like to play with friends in the fighting games of the series, but have not seen "Mortal Kombat" - try it, you may like it (at least the first part).

Assassin's Creed

  • Science fiction, action, adventure.
  • UK, USA, France, Hong Kong, 2016.
  • IMDb: 5, 9.

Critics' opinions on the adaptation of Assassin's Creed were divided: someone considered it a worthy and entertaining film, others compared the film's director Justin Kurzel with Uwe Boll, who has been filming disgusting adaptations of video games from year to year.

True, as always, in the middle: the viewer will not have the most stupid plot, good action and excellent play by Michael Fassbender. It is recommended for fans of the original game, "Prince of Persia" and other parkour in sand decorations.
