Nosebleeds usually do not hurt, but they are much more inconvenient. The advice of a doctor from Harvard School of Medicine will help you quickly stop a nosebleed without using any available means.

You probably know several ways to stop nosebleeds. For example, putting ice on your neck or forehead is one of the most common methods, but in practice it is not as effective. First, ice is not always at hand. Blood can run on the street or on public transport. Secondly, the application of ice does not have the proper effect.

It is better to heed the advice of professionals. In a video posted on the Harvard School of Medicine blog, Dr. Howard LeWine demonstrates how to stop nosebleeds without the use of available tools:

  1. Do not throw your head back, lean your chin forward slightly.
  2. First take a deep breath in and out through your mouth. This will help lower your blood pressure and calm down a bit.
  3. Place your thumb and forefinger on either side of the bridge of your nose - the higher the better. Then, gently pressing the wings of the nose, slide your fingers downward until you find a depression. Press both sides of the nose firmly against the septum, the plate that divides the nasal cavity into two halves.
  4. Hold your fingers with light pressure until the bleeding stops. If it does not slow down, move your fingers slightly higher or lower and repeat the procedure from the beginning.
  5. Keep your fingers in this position for at least five minutes. If it is still bleeding, repeat the procedure, holding your nose for another five minutes. This time should be enough to stop the blood completely.

If after 5-10 minutes the bleeding cannot be stopped, it is better to call an ambulance.
