Gone are the days when films with beautiful pictures, big budgets and top-notch stars were always released in cinemas. Today, cable channels and streaming services are already producing great films themselves or buying them from studios even before the premiere. The lion's share, of course, comes from streaming giant Netflix, but other studios are releasing more exclusive content every year.

1. Story

  • USA, 2018.
  • Drama.
  • Duration: 114 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 3.

But Jennifer herself remembers her childhood story in a completely different way. This forces her to find her lovers. At the same time, Jennifer will have to meet her own 13-year-old double and change her attitude towards herself.

Almost all good unreported films are out on Netflix now. But HBO managed to seize the rights to Storytelling after the Sundance festival and released the picture exclusively for its viewers.

2. Annihilation

  • USA, 2018.
  • Science fiction, thriller.
  • Duration: 115 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 9.

After the fall of an unknown object from space, a mysterious "flickering" zone appears on Earth. People disappear there, communication does not work and the very laws of nature change. A group of female scientists are sent there to conduct research and possibly make contact with aliens who have come to Earth. The main character (Natalie Portman) has her own motives for the campaign. Her husband returned from there, but has changed a lot, and she wants to understand the reasons for what happened.

Director Alex Garland ("Out of the Car") took Jeff Vandermeer as the basis for the plot. And this is the rare case when we can say that the film adaptation turned out better than the original source. From a fairly standard novel, the director managed to make a complex intellectual film about the relationship between man and nature, as well as about understanding the essence of a cancerous tumor. Initially, Annihilation was filmed for wide distribution, and in the United States, the film was even released in some cinemas. But Garland was asked to change the ending, making it more understandable for the viewer. The sale of the painting to the service allowed leaving the plot unchanged.

3. Kodachrome

  • Canada, USA, 2018.
  • Drama.
  • Duration: 105 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 8.

The plot tells about the head of the record company Matt (Jason Sudeikis). One day his girlfriend Zoe (Elizabeth Olsen) comes to him and says that she worked as an assistant to his father (Ed Harris). But now he is dead, and Matt must fulfill his posthumous wish - to print photographs with "Kodachrome". There is only one Kodak laboratory left in the country, and the heroes will have to go on a long journey. And the father will follow them invisibly.

Like many others, this picture was overbought by Netflix after its premiere at the Toronto Festival.

4. Caliber

One of the films that came to Netflix from outside the US. The British thriller is very different from its American counterparts in sharpness and naturalism.

5. Paterno

  • USA, 2018.
  • Biography, sports.
  • Duration: 105 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 5.

This biographical film by director Barry Levinson follows the legendary American coach Joe Paterno (Al Pacino). Under his leadership, the college football team has achieved unprecedented results. However, in 2011, his career collapsed due to the fact that Paterno's assistant was accused of numerous harassment of underage boys. And according to the majority, the coach could not have been unaware of this.

In the film "Paterno", in addition to Al Pacino, other stars of the first magnitude also starred. For example, Riley Keough and Katie Baker. However, the HBO channel did not allow the film to be released in cinemas, but reserved it for its viewers.

8. Forgive us our debts

The main character Guido does not know how to live on. He has many debts and no job or loved ones. He decides to get a job and knock out debts from others in order to close his own. However, Guido turns out to be too conscientious and kind for such an occupation.

Netflix has long been interested in more than just the English-speaking public. Films and TV series in French or Spanish often appear in the service's arsenal, and in 2018 even several Indian projects were released. The Italian painting “Forgive us our debts” is an excellent confirmation of the internationality of the current platforms.

Michael Peña has recently been known exclusively for his comedic roles. Even in the rather serious film "" he was the main supplier of jokes. And in exactly the same way he was remembered in "Ant-Man". The same picture proves that Peña can play quite serious roles.

After that, terrible inexplicable phenomena begin to occur at the station, and even a stranger appears.

The Cloverfield Paradox was originally going to be called Part of God and was filmed in theaters. But first, producer JJ Abrams suggested linking the story to the Cloverfield franchise, and then Netflix bought the picture and released it a few hours after the first announcement. As a result, the new film not only explains the events of the previous parts, but also provides a groundwork for an infinite number of sequels.

13. Dumb

  • UK, Germany, 2018.
  • Science fiction, detective, thriller.
  • Duration: 126 minutes.
  • IMDb: 5, 4.

In the world of the future, Amish Leo (Alexander Skarsgard), who lost the ability to talk as a child, is trying to find his missing girlfriend. In his search, he faces a world full of intrigue and betrayal. And he also meets strange surgeons Cactus and Duck (Justin Theroux and Paul Rudd), who are somehow connected with the incident.

Director Duncan Jones referred to this film as the spiritual successor to his first work, Luna 2112. But this only damaged the picture: the world of the future is shown here rather poorly, and the effects are frankly weak. However, a simple story of human powerlessness in the face of the cruelty of the surrounding world unfolds here, and Skarsgård copes with the emotional role perfectly.
