You can't go back in time and give advice to yourself to a 20-year-old. But you can listen to the experience of your elders and not make irreparable mistakes.
For me, a woman who is about to change her sixties, the last 10 years have been a time of serious reflection and personal growth. I have learned so many important lessons and learned as much useful information from them as I have not learned in all the previous years. I often catch myself thinking: if only I knew then what I know now. And if I could share wisdom with 20-year-olds, 30-year-olds, I would tell these 10 things.
1. Work where you like
Life is too short to spend more than 40 hours a week at work that is stressful and unfulfilling. Money is important, but happiness is more important. There is no reason to continue to cling to work, smile tightly and carry this burden. Think about what you love to do and find a way to capitalize on your hobby. You will be much happier if you do this.
2. Decide on your goals and implement them
Find out what really brings you satisfaction, what is important and meaningful to you. Setting goals is time-consuming, hard work, but really worth it. Don't waste time chasing things you don't need. Why live at random when you can live a real life with direction and meaning.
3. Love and accept yourself unconditionally
You were born unique and unique, and so you remain. There is no need to condemn yourself, this only leads to senseless suffering, which will deprive you of strength and from which it is not easy to get rid of.
Only accepting yourself with all your advantages and disadvantages will you feel freedom and be able to show all your best qualities.
4. Understand that love doesn't last forever
It's sad, but true. Even the closest relationships can change. Marriage and friendship can break down, love can disappear. You are growing as a person all the time, and sometimes it happens that you just outgrow what you love. But remember that any relationship is important, even if it does not last long.
5. Cherish your parents
We all know that nobody lives forever. But for some reason, a part of you believes that your parents will always be there. Be sure to tell your parents how much you love them, because there will come a time when you will no longer have that opportunity. This time will come without warning, so let your parents know what they mean to you.
6. Know that your body will change
Just as a part of you always believes that your parents will live forever, so a part of you believes that the body will remain the same. You think that in some way the force of gravity is not acting on you. This is certainly not the case. One day you look in the mirror and wonder what kind of old man is looking at you. Just know that you are in good company.
7. Make savings
Get in the habit of saving some of your money, even if you're still young. The sooner you start, the longer interest will be accrued on your savings and the more they will grow. And if you delay and wait for the moment when the pension is not far off, you will have to urgently reduce your usual expenses and work harder so that at least something remains for old age.
8. Understand that not everyone will love you
So there is no point in trying to please everyone. There will always be someone who will not like you. And this characterizes them more than you. So don't waste a minute trying to change their mind.
Better to spend your time and energy with people who value you.
9. Make your wishlist
A wish list is a list of things that you would like to do before you die (and this does not mean that such a list is needed only for those who are about to die).
Don't let everyday little things get in the way of your real life. Write down everything you want to try in your life. When you do something from this list, cross out the items one by one. You will find that your life is truly happier.
10. Ask yourself if you like your life
Sometimes our life goes on at the same pace as we do, and sometimes it revolves around us. Regularly ask yourself if you like your life, if you have the opportunity to change what prevents you from enjoying it. Life is one, so live the way you dream.
