Quality items will last longer if you take care of them properly. Throwing everything into the washing machine without hesitation will lead to losses and disappointments.
1. Learn to identify quality things
If a thing costs a huge amount of money, this does not mean that it is of high quality. Yes, such clothes are usually more expensive, but still, when buying, you need to pay attention not only to the price.
- Check the seams. They must be even and the same. Turn the thing inside out: the seams should be continuous everywhere. Threads sticking out of the seams are a sign of poor quality. The threads themselves must be strong.
- Make sure to match the pattern on the fabric along the seam.
- Be sure to try things on. Inexpensive brands try to cut costs by spending as little fabric as possible on each item, so as a result, the clothes may not fit well.
2. Learn the basics of washing
- Do not forget about the information on the label. Each item has instructions on the temperature at which it is best to wash and iron it.
- Do not use too much powder; excess powder will remain in the seams.
- Do not rub the stained areas too vigorously; this can only force the dirt into the fabric more strongly.
- Do not tumble dry too often. Cracks and pills form on cotton fabrics on regular tumble dryers.
- Before washing, sort things not only by color, but also by type of fabric. Do not wash rough fabrics with thin T-shirts or laundry.
3. Get the right attachments
For example, with good hangers (especially trousers and skirts) you won't have to iron too often. For sweaters, choose soft hangers that won't drag on.
Proper storage will also help keep things in good condition. For example, garment bags prevent wrinkles and moth repellents protect clothing from insect damage.
Use special rubber balls during washing. They do not allow pellets to form, and the filler in down jackets does not get lost with such washing.
If you use an automatic dryer, throw a dry towel into it with your clothes: it will absorb some of the moisture from the clothes, and the clothes will dry faster.
4. Know which fabrics need special care
Cashmere
Cashmere items are best hand washed (although a delicate machine wash is also fine). Such things should be washed in warm water with a little powder. Then rinse the item, wring it out gently and leave to dry in a horizontal position.
Silk
It is better to wash silk items with cold water, by hand or in the delicate wash cycle. If washing in a machine, put silk items in a laundry bag so they don't come into contact with other clothes. Never leave silk in water for more than 30 minutes. You can dry it both on a hanger and in a horizontal position.
Raw denim
Unprocessed denim also requires special care. During the production process, it is not washed in hot water, therefore it retains a rich color, and after a few times the sock takes the shape of your body. It is not recommended to wash jeans made from such fabric. They are usually advised to freeze them. Of course, this will not get rid of dirt and bacteria, but it will eliminate the unpleasant odor.
It is best to treat only the dirty spots and spray the jeans with an antibacterial spray. After about six months, their socks can be washed by hand in warm water, after turning them inside out.
