Most scientific work suggests that the relationship between our clothing and behavior is almost biological. What you wear can affect your thinking and communication skills, hormone production, and heart rate.
No one has conducted large-scale experiments, all the results come to us from small laboratories. But this is enough to understand how clothes affect our lives.
Formal suit or wrinkled T-shirt?
If you want to be successful and creative at work, you need to wear a suit. This conclusion was reached by the researchers in August 2015.
Participants in the experiment were asked to choose a formal suit or informal attire, and then take tests for quick wits. Those who were dressed in business suits during assignments were better at solving problems in abstract thinking. This type of thinking is required in order to come up with interesting ideas and be a good strategist.
But informal clothing can negatively affect the results of your work. In particular, this style is absolutely unsuitable for negotiations. A study published in December 2014 found that those who prefer formal suits to casual clothes perform much better during negotiations.
Formally dressed people are more willing to enter the game, bargain well, and end up making deals on better terms.
Moreover, those participants in the experiment who preferred the informal style had lower blood testosterone levels at the end of the trial.
Interestingly, the doctor's white coat makes a person be more attentive. Participants in an experiment conducted in 2012 demonstrated that if you put on a doctor's uniform and begin a complex task that requires close attention, you can make half the mistakes.
At the same time, participants who donned white coats, but thought that they were the clothes of painters, and not doctors, made mistakes as often as those who did not wear uniforms at all.
Every hunter wants to know
Is it possible that the color of our clothes affects our productivity? Scientists have become interested in this issue, having received evidence that the shades of our clothes directly affect the results of work. For example, at the 2004 Olympic Games, those athletes who wore a red uniform won more often.
In 2013, scientists asked 28 male athletes of the same size, strength, and age to compete against each other. At the same time, one of the opponents wore a red uniform, the other a blue one.
It turned out that the athletes in red had a higher carrying capacity, their heart rate was higher than that of their competitors. However, the influence of color was limited to this: both reds and blues won with the same frequency.
Main exhibit
Trying to look very stylish and trendy can backfire as well. Especially if you wear fakes under well-known brands.
Unfortunately, fake outfits and accessories make us not only insecure, but also change our behavior.
This is evidenced by the result of an unusual experiment. A group of participants were given points. Some of the girls were told that the accessories were from the latest collection of a very famous brand, while others were told that they were fakes. The participants were then asked to solve several tests. The better they complete this task, the more money they will receive as a reward.
Surprisingly (and quite unexpectedly), those girls who knew that glasses were fake were more likely to try to cheat, cheat, and falsify test results. The authors of the study believe that it was the fake accessory that caused the participants to be dishonest.
In addition, as a result of the experiment, it turned out that girls who knew about a fake more often suspected other participants of cheating and cheating.
Red sneaker effect
It is not news that we judge others by their clothes. Scientists say: we prefer to see on others exactly the clothes that we expect. For example, a doctor should wear a white coat, boys should wear something blue or light blue. But there is an exception to this rule, and it is called the "red sneaker effect".
In 2014, the results of a study were published in which scientists studied our reactions to refusal to comply with strict rules. It turned out that a person wearing a red bow tie to an event whose dress code requires a black tie would receive approval from those around him. Moreover, people will consider such an “informal” a person with a high social status, professional and great originality.
Another experiment demonstrated that a professor who pairs casual formal clothing with a pair of bright red sneakers or sneakers is more appreciated by students.
We interpret a small (!) Deviation from the norm as a powerful manifestation of individuality. At the same time, we fix: this person is original and can afford to risk social status.
