What is "Plantain"

This is a joint podcast of Lifehacker and "". "" Has already had three seasons. In the first, we gave advice on self-development, in the second, we learned from people from Russian cities how they adapted to life during a pandemic. And in the third, the podcast host Irina Rogava, together with the historian, urbanist and blogger Pavel Gnilorybov, figured out how 2020 changed the life of mankind, and talked about what awaits us in the future.

1. Nature has become so purified …

Due to the pandemic, the amount of harmful emissions has decreased, there are fewer people on the streets, and wild animals, such as beavers, moose and hares, have ceased to be afraid and have come to cities. But not only this has changed in the life of megacities in 2020. Lockdown made people look at their surroundings in a new way: we began to walk more, explore familiar places more closely, look into the courtyards of houses, and visit parks more often.

Perhaps the rooftops will soon be the main places for recreation, and the cable car will become public transport. Why - they told in the first episode of the podcast.

2. New habits have appeared

2020 dictated new rules to people and forced them to adapt to themselves. And although most of the changes were unpleasant, we also took out positive moments from this year. The pandemic has motivated many to take care of themselves and acquire new healthy habits. Social activity increased - during the pandemic, volunteers delivered food to the elderly, took care of animals, and went shopping to neighbors. And yet, paradoxically, we began to communicate with relatives more often: to call to find out how they are doing and if everything is in order with their health.

In 2020, the rhythm of life and consumption habits have also changed. When asked what they have become, Irina and Pavel answered differently.

3. Online won offline. Or not?

People have been worried for several years that all processes will gradually move to the digital environment. And it is not unreasonable: contactless cash registers appear in supermarkets, correspondence or video calls on social networks are increasingly replacing live meetings with friends, to call a taxi you no longer need to talk to a dispatcher - just press a button in the application. And in 2020, the fear of total oblivion of offline life has only become stronger - thanks to the lockdown and remote control.

However, you should not be afraid of online - it does not spoil people, but helps society to develop. And this is exactly what Irina and Pavel talked about in the third episode of the podcast.

4. Home instead of office now?

In 2020, a significant part of the working population had to move to a remote location. And opinions on this matter were divided: some were happy about the opportunity to be at home more, others could not collect their thoughts and tune in to a working mood away from the team. One way or another, everyone had to adapt to the new conditions. And perhaps the main change in the work schedule of many people has become endless Zoom meetings: it seems that they will not disappear anywhere either in 2021 or in 2022.

The pandemic has also changed the labor market: some professions have become unnecessary, while for others, on the contrary, the demand has grown exponentially. In the podcast, Irina and Pavel discussed what should be learned now in order not to be left idle in the new reality. We also talked about how offices will change in the future.

5. Bicycles, carsharing, taxis have become even more popular

A personal car remains a symbol of freedom, so you shouldn't expect everyone to give up their cars in the coming years. Nevertheless, there is an entertaining statistics: in 2020 the demand for bicycles has grown Avito has noted an increase in demand for bicycles by 36%! So eco-friendly transport is slowly but surely penetrating the life of megacities.

During the pandemic, public transport has also changed: the intervals of the metro, buses, trams have become shorter; car sharing services have gained popularity; The disinfection of carriages and salons began to be dealt with more thoroughly. And even in 2020, the Russians took up domestic tourism and went to discover the country: which directions were in the top were discussed in the podcast.
