The story of the holiday, funny congratulations and more are waiting for you.
When and why students' Day is celebrated
Students have two holidays. The first is the Day of Russian Students, which is celebrated on January 25. It was on this day in 1755 that Empress Elizaveta Petrovna signed the decree History of Moscow University on the establishment of Moscow University. True, the date was declared a holiday of students only in 1850. At first, it was just the birthday of Moscow University, which was vigorously celebrated by its students and teachers. But gradually people from other universities joined the celebrations. The early Christian martyr Tatiana Rimskaya began to be considered the patroness of students, because the day of her memory fell on January 25. That is why Student's Day is often called Tatyana's Day. After the October Revolution, the holiday was first renamed the Day of Proletarian Students, and then gradually forgotten. Only in the 90s began to revive the tradition. In modern Russia, the Day of Russian Students is considered an official Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of January 25, 2005, No. 76, a holiday since 2005.
The second holiday is celebrated on November 17 - this is the International Students 'Day 17 November: International Students' Day. In fact, this is a day of remembrance of the activists of the student movement who died at the hands of the Nazis. On October 28, 1939, students and university teachers took to the streets in Prague to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak state. Nazi troops broke up the demonstration, fatally wounding one of the students. He died two weeks later, and his funeral escalated into protests against the Nazi regime. The next day, November 17, Czech universities were closed and more than a thousand people were arrested, nine of whom were executed. Two years later, at the International Meeting of Students Fighting Against Nazism, it was decided to celebrate this date as Student's Day.
Celebrating Student's Day
Before the October Revolution on January 25, students organized merry festivities. So, all over Moscow, Moscow is everyday: sketches of city life at the beginning of the twentieth century were sung, restaurants until the morning were filled with drunken youth, and the police that night treated the students condescendingly.
Viktor Sadovnichy Rector of Moscow State University, from an interview for the Garant company
I read an Internet interview with Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichy, a description that says that when a professor jumped on the table, read poetry to students, they could pull him off, jump onto the table and read further poetry. It was such a fun holiday.
Now, each university has its own traditions for Tatiana's day, but the habit of gathering in a cafe or at home on the evening of January 25 among students has been preserved to this day.
International Students' Day is almost never celebrated in Russia. But in Europe on November 17, events are held, reminiscent of the history of the student movement. And in the Czech Republic, an official holiday was established on this day - the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy.
