Changing jobs is always difficult. And in some situations this is simply not possible, no matter how many inspirational quotes you read about “you have to follow your dream”.

Perhaps, having changed your existing job for the work of your dreams, at first you will be forced to receive half as much as before, and your family budget will not stand it. Or, to build a career, you need to get an education for which you do not have the time or money.

In any case, you should not give up your dream just because you cannot fully devote yourself to another occupation right now. Here are five options for those who want to change their profession, but cannot do it yet.

1. Save your profession, change your field of activity

If you cannot change your profession yet, for example, due to the lack of the necessary skills, then at least you can change the field of activity and become much closer to your dream.

For example, you work as a lawyer in a real estate agency, and dreamed of working on television. But to completely change your profession, you lack the skills and connections. You can get a job as a lawyer in a television company, get into this sphere, see how everything works there, acquire useful contacts, and only then try yourself in another profession - in the field of television. Of course, working in another field also requires acquiring new skills, but this will be much easier than mastering a completely new profession in a new field.

2. Get involved in a business for which the skills of your past profession will be useful

If you don't like what you are doing now, but you have not yet decided what you would like to do next, try to find a job for which your skills will be useful.

For example, if you worked in the HR department, you could start a small business recruiting course or start your own recruiting agency. Perhaps, in the process, you will realize that you have always liked your profession, and not only with the place of work.

3. Promote within the company

Let's say you know for sure that you are not made for the work that you do in the company. For example, you don't like answering phone calls, but you don't see any career opportunities.

Take a look around - there may be a position that appeals to you more. If so, make acquaintance with people from this department, ask them about all the advantages and disadvantages of their position, ask for advice on how you can get to them and whether it is worth doing. Maybe you can even help them in some project, take part on a voluntary basis. The management will appreciate your initiative and suggest a new position that suits you much better.

4. Find something to do outside of work

If you have time to do something you love besides your main job, that's great. Volunteering, helping friends in their business, extra work after work, even blogging about what interests you - all this will help you learn and pump new skills and get closer to your dream job without losing your usual income.

Maybe in the process you realize that this passion is enough for you to satisfy the need for this activity. For example, if you've always dreamed of working in the food industry, try starting a food blog. It is quite possible that this hobby will be enough for you and you will understand that it is not at all necessary to devote yourself to cooking.

It can happen in another way: you will understand that your hobby is your life's work. If so, taking extra classes will help you gain useful skills and experience and get closer to your ideal job.

There are enough examples when people started with a hobby, and later completely devoted themselves to their favorite pastime. For example, many writers, before publishing their works, made their living with something unrelated to literature.

5. Check often if you can change profession

Circumstances change, you just need to notice it in time. Perhaps earlier you could not change your profession due to the fact that you had to provide for your family, but now your partner got a high-paying job, and you can afford not to work at all for several months. Isn't this a great opportunity to try yourself in a new field?

Ask yourself often: "Can I afford to change jobs?" As soon as the opportunity arises, you will.

All five points require some effort: communication, acquiring new connections, skills, experience. But isn't every day spent at your favorite job worth it? I think it's worth it.
