The life hacker asked the expert how to raise an organized child.
A disciplined toddler is every parent's dream. He helps with the housework, does homework, is not late for classes, goes to bed on time, can sit out a whole lesson or be limited to one cartoon episode. Such a child is organized, assiduous, attentive and result-oriented.
We asked a psychologist what to do to bring up the same person.
Self-discipline must be taught from early childhood, preferably from birth. This process is gradual: a child is born without ready-made models of behavior. They are formed under the influence of the immediate environment. To teach a child self-discipline, first of all, the parents themselves must be disciplined and organized. Therefore, I advise adults the following.
1. Keeping promises made
If a child is allowed to buy something, it means he has to buy it. We decided to punish - we keep our word and punish the child, despite the feelings (it became a pity, got excited, and after a couple of minutes changed their minds). If you weren’t going to do something, you don’t need to talk about it and make empty promises.
2. Comply with the time frame
For example, if adults give a child five minutes to pick up toys, then exactly five minutes later you should check whether the task has been completed or not. Or another situation: the kid was allowed to watch TV for half an hour. Exactly after 30 minutes, you need to turn off the cartoon.
3. Stick to a daily routine
It is very important to put the child to bed, not when the baby himself wants it or when it is convenient for the parent, but at approximately the same time. This also applies to awakening.
4. Behave constructively in various situations - without screaming and hysterics
If you dropped the mug and broke it, say: "Oh, wow, you should have been more careful, henceforth I will be more careful" and go for a mop. Or went with the child to the store for the thing you need, but it was not there. Explain to your child that in this case, you need to look for it in another store or come for it on another day when it is available.
5. Instill responsibility
You can give the child small tasks and assignments for which only he will be responsible. For example, taking care of houseplants, pets, dusting, washing dishes.
