4. Svetitskhoveli

12. Vardzia

It included many rooms, tunnels, a water supply system and a monastery and was completely hidden in Mount Erusheti. But in 1283, after a strong earthquake, part of the mountain collapsed and Vardzia was badly damaged. Now there are about 600 rooms left, including a functioning temple with unique frescoes.

13. Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory

The Abastumani observatory became the first alpine observatory in the USSR. Its construction began in 1934 at an altitude of 1,650 m. It is noteworthy that it is still functioning and its territory is open to visitors.

You can climb Mount Kanobili, where the observatory is located, by a special cable car or by car. And the most interested have a chance to get on a night tour and even look at the stars through a telescope.

The longest cable car in Georgia was built in the resort city of Batumi. Its length is 2.5 km, and the ascent takes 10 minutes. The trailers start from the lower station, not far from the seaport, and finish on Mount Feria, gaining a height of 252 m. 16. Bagrat temple

The entire Kutaisi and its surroundings can be seen from the hill on which the temple was built. This is the highest point in the city and its main attraction. In 1089, King David the Builder was crowned here.

The temple has a difficult fate. Several times it suffered from enemy raids, and in the end only ruins remained of its walls.

Destroyed Bagrati was listed as a World Heritage Site. Later, restoration began, and in 2012 it ended with the installation of a two-meter bronze cross on the renovated temple. However, such changes did not suit UNESCO, and the temple was removed from the lists due to the loss of its former appearance.

How to get there

The Bagrat Temple is visible from anywhere in the city, so it is easy to find it. You can get there by car or climb on foot. The road from the center of Kutaisi will take no more than half an hour.

17. Cave of Prometheus

The largest of the discovered caves in Georgia. In fact, this is a whole complex of caves with its own microclimate, there are even underground rivers and lakes. The total length of the Kumistavi crossings (the first name of the cave) is about 11 km, although only a tenth of them are open to tourists.

The walk through the cave takes about an hour. The trail leads under stalactite arches through six natural halls.

How to get there

Rare minibuses go from the town of Tskhaltubo (Kutaisi region), which is closest to the cave. If you are not in the mood to wait long, take a taxi. Any local driver knows the way to Kumistavi.

If you want to add some thrill, this is the place for you. The canyon 50 m deep and 3 km long is an hour's drive from Kutaisi. The main feature of this place is a suspended trail that allows you to walk directly over the gorge. Below you can see the bubbling Okatse River, after which the canyon is named. The extreme road ends with an observation deck hanging over the abyss.

19. Cable cars Chiatura

In 1954, the first passenger cable car of the Soviet Union appeared in the Georgian city of Chiatura, and later about 20 more lines were built. Chiatura is located in a gorge, and cable cars were designed to deliver residents to inaccessible mountain areas, as well as transport magnesium, which has been mined here since the last century.

All the cabins and stations of the cable car are a real rarity: they have been in use for more than half a century. Locals are accustomed to such transport, but for beginners this entertainment may seem extreme: the slope of the lines reaches 48 degrees.

20. Svan towers
