Blogger Tim Denning told how he began to live by the principles of minimalism.
Three years ago, I had four computers, two laptops, five mobile phones, two tablets, two closets full of clothes, more than 20 pairs of shoes, and a mountain of CDs and DVDs.
I bought a new shirt every time I was invited to a birthday party. The situation was rapidly spinning out of control. Then I had not yet begun to work on myself and I did not feel well. Buying useless things dulled the pain, but not for long. And I decided to change my life.
I started with the biggest one, my BMW. It took me a lot of time and money just to keep it in working order. He looked like a screaming child who constantly needs something. I didn't want to spend more time caring for the car, just to look successful in the eyes of others.
I put the car up for sale. It was very hard. Every potential buyer found some flaws in him, and all this red tape prevented me from starting a new life. I ended up selling the car for next to nothing. But the main thing is that I got rid of it. After that, the process of transition to minimalism began in earnest.
Trying to give someone else your unnecessary things is useless.
It seemed to me that the things I wanted to throw away might be useful to someone. But finding such a person is quite problematic. I spent a lot of time and effort negotiating with people and sending them my things.
It's not worth it. If you are serious about living a minimalist lifestyle, throw away everything you don't need. Of course, clothes, shoes and electronic devices can be donated to charities. This will help those who are unable to buy a new one.
Throw it away if you haven't used the item for a year.
When I was sorting out my things, it turned out that I had not picked up some of them for more than five years. We tell ourselves that we will use them someday, but that day never comes. All these things turn into trash.
And it can be not only physical, but also digital. I still need to parse more than 10 TB of data. They slow down the operating system, make it difficult to find the information you need, and constantly require you to spend money on space in the cloud.
Don't think about where to start - go for it. Throw away at least one unnecessary item every week.
The hardest part was throwing away my old Mac Pro. For a very long time I could not decide on this. I ended up getting angry with myself. During the time that I spent thinking, I could have done a bunch of other things.
By clearing the space around you, you also free your thoughts. You will have more time for what really matters to you.
