Sushi + burrito = sushirrito

Peter Yen loves to eat well. For a long time he was tormented by the question: why can't you cook as appetizing as in sushi restaurants, but at the same time serve customers as quickly as in takeria? These reflections led to the fact that in 2008, Peter registered a strange trademark - Sushirrito (Sushirrito).

Sushirrito - this is a symbiosis of sushi and burritos, when not fish and seafood are wrapped in nori and rice for rolls, but minced meat, beans, tomatoes, cheese, avocado and so on. In short, what is usually put in tortillas is called burritos. At the same time, the filling is seasoned with salsa and other savory sauces.

In 2010, Peter met Ty Mahler, a chef from San Francisco. The guys combined their culinary creativity and a year later opened the first fast food restaurant, the highlight of the menu of which was sushirrito.

The success followed so quickly that soon Ian and Mahler opened four more such establishments in downtown San Francisco and one in Palo Alto. People loved that they no longer have to hesitate between their two favorite foods. Unlike sushi, which must be eaten while sitting at the table, sushirrito can be taken with you and eaten on the way to the office. Unlike burritos, from which everything is always falling out and flowing, the filling in sushirrito is tightly wrapped in rice and seaweed - you won't get dirty. Finally, it's just delicious and satisfying.

The original restaurant currently has eight different sushi burritos with poetic Asian names on the menu. For example, "Kiss of a Geisha": yellowfin tuna, Japanese tamago omelet, piquillo peppers, tobiko caviar, cucumbers seasoned in sweet sauce (Namasu), chips, lettuce, avocado, sesame seeds, white soy sauce. The cost of the newfangled "shawarma" is from 9 to 13 dollars.

But to taste sushirrito, you don't have to go to San Francisco. The culinary concept flew across the ocean - establishments with unusual fast food are opening in Europe one after another. People try, take pictures and post the novelty on Instagram. Hashtag -.

However, Ian did not invent the bicycle - he just created another hybrid dish, of which there are dozens of them. This is a whole gastronomic trend!

This strange hybrid food

Messages about the "invention" of a new food flashed in the press with enviable constancy. In 99% of cases, the new turns out to be a combination of the two old ones. Cooking is as old as the world. The tastes of products and the recipe for their preparation have long been known. But people crave unexplored gastronomic experiences. Gourmets need to be surprised! Perhaps this is what prompts chefs to invent and prepare hybrid dishes. Asians have the palm in this matter. For example, the former owner of a Tokyo restaurant Keizo Shimamoto, having moved to New York, began to cook burgers. But instead of buns, he uses ramen noodles. It.

You can also replace the burger buns with rice, and instead of cutlets, fry the meat in yakiniku sauce.

You can also make a burger with bacon, minced meat and vegetables in the form of a roll.

The burger can also be crossed with Mexican quesadilla. Just $ 10, $ 29, and a juicy burger cutlet with pico de gallo sauce and herbs is yours.

Hybrids of burgers and pizza are no less popular in the world of fast food. The Boston chain of restaurants and sports bars is considered the pioneer of this dish.

But soon the idea was taken up by catering around the world.

For dessert, the legendary cronut (from the English words croissant - "croissant" and donut - "donut"). This donut / croissant hybrid is the brainchild of a New York bakery. An analogue of cronut can also be tried in Europe, albeit under different names.

These are not all hybrid dishes. Ramenito, pizza hot dog, waffle donuts - the list goes on. The only pity is that most of these dishes are like fireworks: they flash brightly in the gastronomic horizon, cause a lot of noise, but the public's interest quickly dries up, and everyone soon forgot about unusual combinations.
