Before switching to a Mac, I really enjoyed working with text without using a mouse, navigating and making edits solely using the keyboard. Even now, I consider this skill indispensable for a developer, a writer, and even more so for a classic office samurai.

Navigating through the text

  1. Move to the beginning of a line - ⌘ + ← (Command + Left Arrow).
  2. Move to end of line - ⌘ + → (Command + Right Arrow).
  3. Move to the beginning of the current word - ⌥ + ← (Option + Left Arrow).
  4. Move to the end of the current word - ⌥ + → (Option + Right Arrow).
  5. Go to the beginning of the text - ⌘ + ↑ (Command + Up Arrow).
  6. Move to the end of the text - ⌘ + ↓ (Command + Down Arrow).

By adding the Shift key, we get six shortcuts for quickly selecting lines, words, and all text.

Text selection

  1. Select text from the current position to the beginning of the line - ⇧ + ⌘ + ← (Shift + Command + Left Arrow).
  2. Select text from current position to end of line - ⇧ + ⌘ + → (Shift + Command + Right Arrow).
  3. Select text from the current position to the beginning of a word - ⇧ + ⌥ + ← (Shift + Option + Left Arrow).
  4. Select text from current position to end of word - ⇧ + ⌥ + → (Shift + Option + Right Arrow).
  5. Select text from the current position to the beginning of the text - ⇧ + ⌘ + ↑ (Shift + Command + Up Arrow).
  6. Select text from current position to end of text - ⇧ + ⌘ + ↓ (Shift + Command + Down Arrow).

These shortcuts work across all versions of macOS, Cocoa-based apps including Safari, Chrome, TextEdit, Pages and the entire iWork suite, and most Mac apps and text editors. What's more, these same keyboard shortcuts also work on iOS devices with a keyboard connected via Bluetooth or a dock connector.
