Probably, many of us, once, wanted to give up everything and radically change our lives. Many wanted it, but only a few did it. These units include the author of the autobiography "The Journey Home" - Radhanatha Swami. He was born in Chicago. His parents gave him the name Richard Slavin. At the age of 16, he, an ardent adherent of hippie culture, decides to change his life and plunge into oriental culture and religion and goes with his friend to hitchhike to India.
With practically no money, they travel across Europe to India, eating only bread and earning money by playing the harmonica. A huge number of trials falls on their heads, from robbers in Afghanistan to drug trance in Kandahar. The author describes in great detail all the adventures on the way to his goal, supplying them with his thoughts and sayings of wise people:
Each has two dogs in his heart - a bad one and a good one, and they constantly fight among themselves. A bad dog personifies our vicious qualities: envy, anger, lust, greed, arrogance and hypocrisy. A good dog is our divine nature: the ability to forgive, compassion, self-control, generosity, humility and wisdom. It all depends on our choice: the dog that we devote more time to and which we feed more, making a choice in its favor, gets more strength. She will bark louder and eventually defeat her rival. To be virtuous is to starve a bad dog and feed a good one.
Throughout the book, Swami reflects on spirituality and tries to find his mentor. The Journey Home is a rather serious, but not devoid of humor, story about all the trials that each of us may face on the way to our goal. This book gives an impetus to the fulfillment of his goal and the opportunity to experience the same that the author experienced.
