In addition to many new features, each iOS update focuses on improving security and protecting user data. Some settings have been around for a long time, others have been around in iOS 12. If you're not using them yet, it's time to get started.
1. Automatic update
The current version of the software is a guarantee of security. It is easy to miss the notification of available updates among others, so it is better to enable automatic installation of updates.
To do this, open “Settings” → “General” → “Software update” → “Auto update” and check that the toggle switch of the same name is on.
The device will now download and install updates on its own as soon as they are released. And only in some cases the installation confirmation may be required.
2. Two-factor authentication
iOS has long supported a great feature that adds an extra layer of protection and ensures data security. You can only enter your account from a trusted device or using a one-time verification code.
To use two-factor authentication, go to Settings → Apple ID → Password & Security, and then click Enable under Two-Factor Authentication. Then confirm the phone number to receive the codes.
Instead of sending temporary passwords, you can use trusted devices - another iPhone, iPad, or Mac - linked to your Apple ID.
3. Limited access to USB
The ability to connect external USB accessories is potentially dangerous as it bypasses the lock screen and can be used by hackers to brute force passwords.
You can eliminate this risk by restricting USB access. To do this, open "Settings" → "Touch (Face) ID and passcode" and deactivate the "USB accessories" toggle switch.
Now, an hour after connecting iPhone to a computer and external accessories, the data transfer function will be blocked and require re-entering the password.
4. Disable GPS tracking of browsing history
In addition to using geolocation for maps, photos, and Siri work, iOS also collects the history of places you visit frequently so that it offers useful information and ads based on them. If desired, the function of such tracking can be turned off.
To do this, go to "Settings" → "Privacy" → "Location services" → "System services" → "Significant places" and switch the toggle switch of the same name.
5. Create secure PIN codes
The standard four-digit lock code can be easily memorized and quickly entered, but it has only 10 thousand combinations that burglars can sort out in a few minutes. The six-digit code is not much more difficult to remember, while it already provides for about a million options.
To change your PIN code to a more secure one, open Settings → Touch (Face) ID and passcode → Change passcode, and then click Passcode options, select Custom code from numbers and enter the desired option.
An even more reliable solution would be to choose an arbitrary code from letters and numbers. However, such a complex password will take more time to enter, so choose whichever is more important to you.
