With heavy censorship, online activity tracking, and regular account hacks, it's not unusual for people to try to use the most anonymous means of communication. If the possibilities of relatively anonymous Telegram are not enough for you and you want to protect correspondence in other popular messengers, an alternative from the darkweb comes to the rescue - Tor Messenger, the beta version of which can already be downloaded for all current desktop platforms.
The novelty is built on the Instantbird messenger developed by the Mozilla community. Accordingly, Tor Messenger works with many chat clients: Google Talk, Facebook, Twitter, and IRC.
Among other things, the developers of Tor Messenger promise to automatically hide chat metadata and ensure communication using the OTR encryption protocol. The use of the latter implies four principles of anonymity and security.
- Encryption. No one can read your instant messages.
- Authentication. Verification of the authenticity of the interlocutor, which gives confidence that you are communicating with the person to whom you actually wrote.
- Stealth. Messages do not have a digital signature that can be traced from the outside. Thus, a third party will not be able to prove that the messages were written by someone else to the addressee.
- Complete anonymity of communication. If you lose access to your private keys, no previous conversation will be available to attackers, and you will not be compromised.
With Tor Messenger, you can continue to communicate in the ways you are used to. All of them are built on a client-server model, which allows servers to access the metadata of your correspondence. However, your path to the server will be hidden as you are communicating over networks.
Beta version of the messenger for Windows, Mac and Linux. No matter how you feel about Tor, the new messenger is the ability to communicate anonymously on familiar platforms and not create additional accounts in third-party messengers.
