The trend this year is smartphones with 18: 9 screens. The life hacker figured out why the standard was changed and why it is called not 2: 1.

In February, the LG G6 was presented, a flagship smartphone with a new 18: 9 screen format. Probably, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the anniversary iPhone 8 will be equipped with similar displays.

What is 18: 9

Aspect ratio, or aspect ratio, is the ratio of the display's height to its width. For example, the dimensions of a 5.5-inch LG G3 screen are 12.2x6.9 cm. Dividing 12.2 by 6, 9, we get 1. 77. The same result will be if 16 is divided by 9.

Most screens of modern smartphones, laptops and TVs have an aspect ratio of 16: 9.

The question is brewing: if everything was fine anyway, why invent a non-format 18: 9? The first reason is marketing. Because of this, we got 18: 9 displays, and not 2: 1, which, in fact, they are.

Another thing is how films will be shown on the screen if their generally accepted standard is 16: 9. Since the LG G6 is still one of a kind, and not much time has passed since the presentation of the smartphone, the developers are in no hurry to release updates to adapt full-screen content to 18: 9.

But if the flagships Samsung and Apple this year receive such a display, this will be a sufficient reason to start updating programs.

In the meantime, LG G6 uses its own adaptation algorithms. The smartphone has two full screen modes. In standard, black bars appear around the application window with 16: 9 content. In Full Screen, the window is adjusted to the new aspect ratio programmatically, in most cases by simply stretching the interface. Stretching is especially inconvenient in games, when some action button can suddenly go off the edge of the screen.

Yes, this is inconvenient, but make allowances for novelty. 18: 9 is a fresh standard that is already being implemented in the film industry and on TV. So adapting content to 18: 9 is a matter of time.
