Lifehacker tested the smallest speaker in the line and a pair of stylish headphones from a manufacturer with a half-century history.
The British company Marshall has been pleasing us with excellent sound for almost 60 years. Her amplifiers sounded riffs by Randy Rhoads, Lemmy, Jimi Hendrix, Dave Mustaine and many other famous guitarists.
Everything Marshall does is sure to look cool and sound right. It doesn't matter if it's a concert cabinet or a small amp for a novice guitarist. The classic "vinyl" body, fabric grille, gold-plated toggle switches cannot be confused with anything.
In 2010, Marshall took over the production of headphones, speaker systems and even released a smartphone. One. It just so happened that I got three cool things at once: a Marshall Stockwell speaker, Monitor Bluetooth wireless headphones and in-ear Mode. I listened and share my impressions.
Column Marshall Stockwell
Marshall Stockwell is the smallest in the line, weighing only 1.2 kg. It is convenient to take it with you on trips or outings with friends. Music plays both via Bluetooth and 3.5 mm input. It works for about 25 hours, so you don't have to worry about autonomy. Moreover, there is a USB port on the back, with which you can recharge your smartphone or tablet.
At the same time, Stockwell looks great - to match other Marshall products. In front, the speakers are covered by a fabric grille with gold edging, the body is made of rubberized black plastic. The traditional "vinyl" trim remains only on the rear.
Above there are golden buttons and "knobs" to control frequencies and volume. The column looks expensive and unusual. I think this is a great gift. Take note.
Cover stand is sold separately. Made in the corporate style, inside is red velvet - after all, Marshall knows how to make beautiful things. The case not only looks cool, but also works as a stand thanks to the built-in magnets. In this regard, it is similar to Smart Cover for iPad.
Now about the sound. The compact body accommodates four speakers (two tweeters and two woofers) and a pair of class D amplifiers. The crumb sounds decent, there is good bass, the tops do not wheeze even at maximum volume. The column, of course, is not for audiophiles, but ordinary users will be satisfied. Moreover, the result can be improved by turning the levers from above. By adjusting the high and low frequencies, you can customize the sound for different styles of music. I advise you to pay attention to this, since the difference is really felt.
In general, it turned out to be a compact, stylish and long-playing speaker.
Marshall Monitor Bluetooth Wireless Headphones
Marshall Monitor Bluetooth is the top ear in the line that has recently become wireless. The decision is expected, given that manufacturers one after another refuse the audio jack in smartphones. However, if necessary, the kit includes a cable with a twisted section and a remote control. It ends on both sides with massive 3.5mm gold-plated plugs.
The design of the earbuds is both rock and roll and emphatically discreet. I see them both as a musician with clogged sleeves and as a man in a business suit who appreciates high-quality sound. The headphones are made great, there are no questions about materials and assembly: the base is metal, the arc is sheathed in leatherette. The ear cushions are also covered with leather substitute, they are very soft and have a memory effect.
With Marshall Monitor Bluetooth, you can comfortably listen to music at home or in the office, it is not particularly hot in them, there is no pressure on your head. At the same time, they look good, tightly fitting the ears. I rode them on the Moscow-Voronezh train for seven hours. During this time, there was no discomfort, I listened to both the classics and the new ones.
Control in Marshall Monitor is tied to a five-way joystick. This is really convenient when one button is responsible for everything, and not a thousand small buttons on both cups. By the way, the latter folds, so the headphones can easily fit into any bag or backpack.
The sound of the Marshall Monitor surprised me. In my opinion, one of the best in their price range. The headphones will delight you with soft and voluminous bass, there is some kind of stage width. They are quite versatile, suitable for blues and rock, as well as soul, electronics. There is aptX support, so you can listen to music over the air without loss.
Soundproofing, though passive, is at a good level. At high volume, people around you do not have to listen to your favorite music, and they are comfortable with them on the subway.
And the most interesting thing: Marshall Monitor works for about 30 hours! The result is what you need for wireless headphones, few can boast of such.
It's no exaggeration to call them the best Marshall headphones. They not only look good, but sound decent as well. I advise everyone who wants cool wireless closed-type headphones in the price range of up to 15 thousand rubles.
Marshall Mode Wired Headphones
And finally, crumbs of Marshall Mode. I'm not a fan of in-ear headphones, in this regard, I prefer AirPods. And there is no audio jack for them in the iPhone. But it was interesting to try them, so I stuck it in the Note 8 and listened to it for several days.
In terms of design, you can't go wild with plugs, so Marshall chose the path of minimalism and austere style. The headphones are made of black plastic and give the impression of a reliable and solid piece. They sit well in the ears, although, as I wrote above, I can not stand the "plugs". Whatever ear pads you try, they still fall out. And also the 3.5mm plug turned out to be ordinary, not gold-plated. It's a shame, though, given the price, it's forgivable.
The headphones sound soundly, but only where bass is pronounced. Low and medium frequencies are worked out properly, but high frequencies fail. Some hard rock, rap and hip-hop are well revealed in them. By the way, these headphones come with the Marshall smartphone. Not a bad gift.
If your smartphone still has an audio jack and you need affordable cool headphones - pay attention to Marshall Mode. These are stylish "plugs" for every day. They have a sturdy construction, durable cable and decent sound with an emphasis on bass.
It's cool that I managed to try all these things, I was especially pleased with the Marshall Monitor speaker and headphones. It's nice to use things that, in addition to numbers and characteristics, have a soul and real rock and roll.
