Something went wrong

Evernote is a popular note-taking service that at one time won the love of many users. The peak of popularity fell on 2011, but it seems that then something went wrong. From a simple and convenient service for writing notes, it has turned into a clumsy monster with a bunch of unnecessary functions. And yet, many chose it for its multiplatformity and interesting features, available even with a free account. But all good things come to an end, and Evernote seems to put sticks in its wheels.

On June 28, 2016, users of the service received “letters of happiness”. You can now connect up to two devices to a free account. That is, having a laptop, smartphone and tablet, you have to choose. Previously, there were no restrictions on the number of connected devices. In some countries, the changes also affected the paid Plus and Premium subscriptions. So, in the US, the cost of the Plus account has grown from $ 2.99 to $ 3.99 per month, and the Premium account - from $ 5.99 to $ 7.99 per month. In Russia, everything has remained unchanged so far: 999 rubles per year for Plus and 1,990 rubles per year for Premium. But for how long?

Users were quick to embrace the company's innovations. Here's what they wrote on Twitter:

Been using a premium Evernote account for several years. The subscription ended yesterday. Prices have gone up today. Google Keep is waiting for me!

one note is convenient, functional and free. I have long wanted to move. And then @evernote_ru himself pushes:)

Why am I all this? Evernote gives you 30 days to "prepare for change." We will manage this time correctly and think about moving to another service.

What do I use

Since I am a fierce "apple", I use the standard Notes application. After going through many alternatives at one time, I returned to the standard application, since I could not find anything simpler and more convenient. Synchronization works great, there is support for Handoff, lists and drawing have recently appeared. The only thing missing is sharing, but it will also be added to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra. Having multiple Apple products can be a great way to organize your workflow. By the way, we wrote how to transfer notes from Evernote to Apple Notes, the time has come.:)

But if the standard "Notes" does not suit you or you have several gadgets on different platforms, you should pay attention to the following applications.

Evernote alternatives

Google keep

pros

  • Simple and user-friendly interface. Notes are represented by colored stickers on which you can write, draw, add images and lists.
  • General access. You can edit the text with colleagues and see the changes in real time.
  • Google Keep syncs with Google Now. A great advantage for owners of Android devices.
  • It is possible to add a reminder to the note and attach geolocation. For example, you can add a store address to your shopping list. The smartphone itself will remind you to drop into the supermarket as soon as you walk past it.
  • No subscriptions, the service is free.
  • Available for Android, iOS, and a Chrome extension.

Minuses

The version for macOS and Windows is missing.

OneNote

pros

  • If you're on Windows, OneNote is your choice. Since it belongs to the Office family, the interface will be familiar to everyone. Naturally, the application is tightly integrated with Windows, shortcuts are supported, working with Word and Excel documents, and much more.
  • Like Evernote, there is a web clipper. With it, you can save web pages and other useful information from your browser.
  • Service is available.
  • OneNote is free, but your notes are stored on OneDrive. That is, when the free 15 GB runs out, you will have to think about expanding the cloud.
  • Moving from Evernote to OneNote is easy.

Minuses

OneNote has a pretty complex interface. Sometimes you just need to open the application, quickly sketch the text, close it and be sure that it will not go anywhere. OneNote doesn't have this simplicity.

Quip

pros

  • Easy migration from Evernote. All your notes are transferred in one click when you first start the application.
  • Quip is an advanced text editor that has even been compared to Microsoft Word rather than Evernote. The service allows you to typeset documents with a complex structure, insert images, tables, lists and hyperlinks.
  • Quip is conveniently organized to work with notes and folders. This helps keep documents organized and easy to find with the built-in search. Most of all, if the number of notes has long exceeded a hundred.
  • for mobile and desktop platforms.

Minuses

Quip has many tools for advanced teamwork, but you have to pay for them. The rest of the app is free.

Simplenote

pros

  • Simple and lightweight interface reminiscent of standard Apple Notes. Nothing distracts from work, only text and a white sheet.
  • There is a possibility of collaboration.
  • The macOS app weighs 30 times less than Evernote.
  • Notes are stored on servers, so if the information you need is missing, you can always restore it.

Minuses

If you need an advanced text editor, not your bro. Text cannot be formatted, pictures or files cannot be inserted. An ordinary note-taking with a nice interface.

Execute, no mercy

There are alternatives to Evernote, and in many ways they bypass it both in terms of interface and in terms of features. Therefore, in general, there is no need to hold on to the drowning service.

If you have any other cool Evernote alternatives in mind, welcome to the comments.
