What to do if your computer makes a lot of noise

Follow these simple steps and you can enjoy silence while you work again.

1. Try not to overload the device

Typically, the buzzing of the computer is amplified when you are running games or other programs that need a lot of processing power. The load on the components increases their temperature. As a result, the fan automatically increases speed, which creates additional noise.

This process is completely normal. It is of course possible to lower the fan speed in the system settings. But this step will most likely lead to overheating of the device. Therefore, if the computer is dust-free and the buzzing intensifies only when working with resource-intensive programs, it is better to do nothing at all.

At the same time, try not to overuse long gaming sessions if the PC gets very hot. Pause to cool it down.

2. Place the system unit on a flat surface

If during operation the computer emits a hum that looks more like vibration, check how stable the position of the system unit is and whether it sways. Make sure all rubber feet are in place and replace missing ones if necessary. You can also try to put a soft rug under the system unit.

3. Check build quality

Sometimes the noise occurs because the elements of the case or its interior are poorly fixed relative to each other. Rotating fans and disks will then shake. The result is an unpleasant vibrating or rattling sound.

To resolve this issue, disconnect the power and other cables from the computer and remove the side cover by removing two or three screws from the rear panel. Carefully inspect the system unit inside and check that all the necessary fasteners are present, as well as its fixation. The missing bolts need to be found and installed, as well as tightened those that are.

Also, pay attention to whether any of the wires is touching the blades of one of the fans: this is fraught with a kind of chirping from friction. Secure any loose cables with cable ties.

4. Remove dust

If the computer began to make noise recently and before this was not observed even during games, then the matter may be in the dust. It builds up on the blades and causes additional friction, interfering with the normal operation of the fan. As a result, a characteristic humming sound is heard.

Moreover, a layer of dust on the heating elements of the PC interferes with their cooling - this increases the overall temperature inside the case. The fan starts to spin faster and therefore hums harder.

Improper disassembly and cleaning can damage your computer. If you are not confident in your abilities, do not take risks. And remember: opening the case will void your warranty.

To reduce the noise level, the dust will have to be removed. This is best done on the balcony. Use a dry soft brush to gently dust off all internal components, including heat sinks and fans. Then blow it out with compressed air or vacuum it up very carefully. When blowing out, it is advisable to hold the fans with your hand, preventing them from rotating.

5. Lubricate the fans

Even after cleaning, coolers can still make noise. This is usually due to lack of lubrication or wear. If you wish, you can immediately replace the elements with new ones, but it still makes sense to try to lubricate the fans first. The procedure should be repeated about once a year.

Disconnect the cooler cable from the motherboard or power supply. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the fastening screws and remove the fan. Turn it upside down with the impeller and gently peel off the round sticker. There may be a rubber seal under it, which also needs to be removed by prying it with a needle.

In front of you will be a small recess with the impeller shaft and retaining ring. If it is completely dry there, the cooler definitely needs lubrication. Take machine oil or general purpose grease and apply three to four drops to the shaft. Rotate the impeller axially several times to distribute the substance inside the bearing.

Replace the rubber seal, if there was one, degrease the plastic around with alcohol. Let the fan dry and reattach the sticker. If it doesn't hold, you can replace it with a piece of good scotch tape. Reinstall the assembled cooler and connect it.

6. Replace the hard drive

The hard disk can also be a source of noise in the computer. Occasionally crackling, clicking or other similar sounds are heard from this component. They talk about problems in the operation of the hard drive and can portend its imminent failure. You can get rid of sounds only by replacing the hard drive. Your best bet is to install a silent and fast SSD.
