We have almost forgotten how to work with our hands and restore broken or old things. The word handmade means funny knick-knacks, we buy disposables, we don't know which side to take the tools from. It's time to think about what we are doing wrong.

To be honest, I expected to see in the book a collection of tips "How to assemble a submarine from broken rattles." But the author writes about something else. The whole book is a manifesto of a person who is sincerely passionate about repairs.

We are already accustomed to throwing away everything that has broken and immediately running after a new one. To be honest, we buy new things when the old ones work just fine. But they become obsolete and go to the landfill.

With gadgets, as a rule, it cannot be otherwise: sometimes we really need the thing to work faster, better. But such a scheme applies in general to everything that surrounds us.

There is a legitimate suspicion that the life of the product is accurately calculated. We are seeing planned obsolescence, specified by the manufacturer and sometimes even desired by the customer (like a mobile phone that you don't want to use for more than a year).

Wolfgang Heckl suggests that you think a little before throwing something into the trash can. It is possible that the thing has a chance to get a second life.

The question is, why should we bother with repairs, if you can order almost everything with home delivery?

There are more reasons than it seems. Repairs are cheaper. Repair makes you think and act. Renovation saves the planet from debris, in the end (we have an unpopular idea, but it's stupid to brush it off).

Repair is about circulating analysis, strategy, implementation, and successful experience.

The author tells countless repair stories from his life. Can you imagine what quest you need to go through to fix a pump or an old sewing machine? And through what obstacles a person who decides to fix a MacBook will break through?

Stories of rescuing out-of-order equipment or furniture turn into a good action game. It is clear why the author is ready to devote his free time to repairs. It turns out that restoring what is broken is a gamble.

Each repair is a test of the strength of your ingenuity and perseverance. Here's how to pass this test, and the book is written.

Why this book is needed

If only to believe in their strength. The book contains a step-by-step guide for those who decide to pick up a screwdriver or a needle for the first time. The main thing is not to be afraid of anything. After all, the thing is already broken, so there is nothing to lose.

A person who has done something with his own hands at least once will not want to simply change it due to a defect, but will try to restore it. Repair is not always profitable, but here everyone determines profitability for himself, since besides economic reasons, there are also emotional ones.

Repair is, of course, useful. Saves resources, saves the environment, protects against falling into a financial hole. Even opposes the consumer society. But renovation is also fun. Trust Wolfgang Heckl: you too will want to redesign the world with your own hands.
