Summing up the results of the outgoing year and choosing the best of the best. Here is the editorial opinion, and you can determine the winner by voting.
Choosing the best book of the year was a challenge for the editors, as the shelves were full of important, inspiring and interesting work. Nevertheless, among them there is one who has earned this honorary title - "21 lessons for the XXI century" by Yuval Noah Harari.
In his previous books, the author talked about the past and speculated about the future. Here he raised the issues that modern man faces: an overabundance of information, the dangers associated with technological progress, the crisis of established political systems and the threat to freedom.
Harari wants to understand not only how people live today, but also who we are. And although he admits that everyone has their own problems, global processes affect everyone's life. The author will not give answers to the questions asked by him, but he does not strive for this. The purpose of the book is to encourage the reader to think.
In 2019, there were other books that deserve mention.
- “Everything is bad. A book about hope " Mark Manson, in which the author proposes not to change the terrible world around him, but to make himself a little better.
- It is impossible not to mention Asya Kazantseva and her third book "The brain is material", in which fascinating descriptions of scientific experiments are interspersed with tests that allow you to check the work of your memory or learn about the peculiarities of vision.
- One of the most relevant books of the outgoing year - "How to stop learning a foreign language and start living in it" Anastasia Ivanova. The author makes a bold statement: the language cannot be fully learned, but this does not mean that it cannot be used now.
- "Unnatural Causes" Richard Shepherd has become a worldwide sensation. One of the most experienced forensic experts involved in the death of Princess Diana and the 9/11 attacks in New York, demonstrates all the ins and outs of forensic science.
