Lifehacker shares simple instructions for installing extensions for Microsoft Edge that are not yet available in the official Windows Store. Bonus - links to pre-release versions of useful extensions.
In addition to games and universal apps, the Windows Store has a section with extensions for Microsoft Edge. It currently hosts about twenty utilities, the most useful of which seem to be Pocket, LastPass, and AdBlock. As time goes by, the choices will widen as developers are already working to adapt their products for Microsoft Edge.
Although the release to the masses is still ahead, the pre-release versions of some extensions can be appreciated by anyone. However, for this you will have to briefly look into the browser settings.
How to install extensions in Microsoft Edge
Type about: flags in the address bar. In the window that opens, find the item "Enable extension developer functions (this may put the device at risk)" and check the box next to it.
After rebooting, go to the Microsoft Edge extensions menu. Along with the link to the Windows Store directory, a new Download Extension button will now appear here. It is assumed that you are aware of your actions and are confident that manual installation from an unknown source will not harm the device or your safety. If so, click on the button and select the folder with the program files.
For example, you can bypass the Windows Store by installing preview versions of these extensions:
- Adguard - blocker of banners, as well as malicious and questionable sites;
- Enpass - universal cross-platform password manager (Lifehacker review - here);
- uBlock Edge is a highly customizable ad cutter.
If something went wrong and the extension seemed too crude to you, disable or delete it with a couple of mouse clicks. To do this, click on the gear opposite the name and select the appropriate item.
Although there shouldn't be any problems with well-known products. Their authors have been smoothing rough edges and fixing found bugs for more than a month. Why don't they go to the Windows Store? Perhaps they are afraid of negative assessments due to minor flaws.
