This is an overview of a 2D tactical RPG set in a hand-drawn setting. Impressive description? I wouldn't be impressed. What if I say that this game is recognized as the best game of 2014 according to many reviewers and specialized resources? That every decision made in the game affects the plot and the outcome, and that the combat system resembles the third Heroes? Now I would take a look.

The Banner Saga was developed by Stoic, a 3-member BioWare studio known for its Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: KotOR games. The game tells the story of the ancient Vikings, in whose world absolute evil has awakened.

The game itself seems to consist of 3 parts: dialogues, the campaign of your tribe and battles. The combat system is reminiscent of classic Heroes. Perhaps it may remind you of something else, but I'm not a big fan of games, so I can't say. Each unit has 3 characteristics: attack power, armor and fortitude. Attack power is both the main characteristic of a fighter's attack and his health. Armor reduces damage from hits, and fortitude is a special parameter that allows you to make special attacks and increase damage from normal attacks. The strength of the spirit increases when killing enemies.

The combat system is complex, but you can quickly figure it out at a basic level. However, in order to understand all the subtleties, you will have to spend much more time.

Dialogues deserve special attention. Each correct or incorrect line affects the plot and can come back to haunt you much later. I don't want to give examples so as not to make spoilers, but I will say that you go nuts more than once.

The only downside is that the game is voiced in English, but there are subtitles that help to somehow understand the twists and turns of the plot.

And finally, the third part of the game is the journey of your caravan. During the journey, you need to monitor the morale of your troops and their supplies. The latter are bought for the local currency "Renown". You need to constantly increase and improve the characteristics of your caravan in order to have a better chance when facing enemy troops.

The Banner Saga is remembered for several things: music, graphic style and dialogue. The combat system is interesting, but it's more of an appendage to a great storyline and heroes that you really empathize with.

The game is available in versions for Windows, Mac and iOS and even on my Air 13 it works just fine. Therefore, I can recommend it to any person who is crazy about tactical RPGs or just loves high-quality and interesting games that are made with a soul.
