On the streaming service more.tv, the series "Chiki" by Eduard Hovhannisyan ("Double Trouble") has started. The project tells about sex workers from a southern city who decided to start a fitness club.

It all starts with the fact that a former colleague Zhanna (Irina Gorbacheva) returns from Moscow to her three friends Marina, Luda and Sveta. She offers to quit the profession and go into business. But for this they need to find money, and those around them do not want to help too much.

Clichés instead of characters

The first problem of the series is the vague main characters. Of the four, only Zhanna looks alive, and even then thanks to Gorbacheva's talent. The actress plays all the dramatic scenes very easily. But even she has nowhere to disperse: the character of the character was prescribed very superficially.

There is no need to talk about the other girlfriends. Rather, they look like stereotypical sketch show masks. Such a move would be acceptable if the authors wanted to show another vulgar comedy. But here comes the groundwork for a full-fledged drama - for such stories, more interesting characters are needed.

It is strange that while some of the secondary characters look more catchy and lively. The same policeman performed by Anton Lapenko manages to reveal himself in several scenes, unlike Lyuda or Sveta. And the son of Jeanne is even more clearly spelled out than most of the other characters combined.

A set of scenes instead of a plot

Perhaps failures in revealing the characters could have been avoided if the series had developed more dynamically. But the trouble is that there is practically no real plot movement in "Chicks". The girls are dashingly trying to plunge into new activities, they immediately face obstacles and that's it. There is nothing more to say about the first episodes.

The author of the project, Eduard Hovhannisyan, clearly decided to stake on staging individual atmospheric scenes. But he does it too directly. Velcro flies, eating watermelon on the shore, Caucasians with barbecue. All this, of course, is alive in the south to this day. But on the screen it looks too much like the same set of sketches.

Moreover, the plots are not glued together in the best way. Here friends habitually end up in prison and try to get out of there, here they are resting on the lake, and here they are discussing a business plan. As a result, "Chiki" turns out to be a set of well-shot sketches, united by common characters.

Caution instead of provocation

It would seem that Oganesyan took a very tough topic: the main characters are far from moral standards, but they are trying to change their lives, and the environment prevents them with all their might.

But in a strange way, the author presents such a provocation as carefully and even sterilely. Girls are shown not too pleasant, so as not to pass for the glorification of their profession, but they are not criticized either. Cartoon villains with no memorable features emerge from nowhere, evoking no emotion.

This ruins the very idea of the series. After all, it is dedicated to attempts to break out of the vicious circle of the profession that they are used to stigmatizing. And even more - to abuse and sexism, which have become the norm for society. But the excessive fear of offending someone makes the plot indistinct and formal. And the topic is really important. In Russian cinema, and even more so in TV shows, it is not often talked about.

Judging by the first episodes, sometimes it is even insulting for the Chiki series. It is surprisingly well filmed, and the same Gorbacheva and Lapenko are clearly playing with soul. The project raises relevant and controversial topics. But still, the minuses still outweigh: the authors lack courage, the heroes lack liveliness, and the plot lacks development.
