What to do if your computer won't turn on

Instructions for Windows and macOS desktops and laptops.

The computer may not turn on due to improper connection or faulty cables, software malfunctions, improper assembly, or damage to internal parts. Some of these problems can only be solved by a specialist. But before taking your device in for repair, try the tips in this article.

If the computer stops turning on after you disassemble it, check that all parts are correctly installed, connected and securely locked in place. Only then proceed to these actions.

1. If the computer does not respond in any way to attempts to turn on or immediately turns off

Make sure your outlet is working. Check the correct connection and integrity of the cables. If you are using an extension cord to connect to the mains, also check its button. Disconnect unnecessary devices from the computer. Perhaps there is an additional power switch on the back of the system unit - check that too.

If you have a laptop, put it on charge and wait at least 30 minutes, then try turning the device back on. If during this time the charging indicator on the power adapter or on the laptop does not light up and the device does not turn on, replace the charger with a working one.

Many motherboards have a removable battery, thanks to which some of the computer settings are not reset even after it is completely turned off. If you are not afraid to void the warranty, disconnect the device from the power supply and open the case. Then gently try to take out the battery and replace it after a few minutes. This will reset all settings, which may be enough for the computer to turn on.

If reinstalling doesn't work, your battery may just be dead. This can also interfere with the inclusion. If you haven't changed the battery for several years, it makes sense to buy a new one, replace the old one and check the computer.

Be careful, on some devices the battery may not be removable. In this case, it will not work to replace or reinstall it.

2. If after switching on you see only a black screen

Let's say that after starting your computer is working, lights are on on it, coolers are noisy, but the screen does not react in any way.

If you are using a separate monitor and its indicator does not light up, check the cable and that the monitor is connected properly. Replace the cord if possible. Doesn't help - take the monitor to a service center.

If the monitor indicator is working or you have a laptop whose screen remains black, then most likely something is wrong with the computer hardware. In this case, it is better to consult a specialist.

If your computer beeps when you turn it on, disconnect all devices except the monitor and try turning it on again.

In some cases, reinstalling or replacing the battery on the motherboard also helps (see the previous paragraph).

3. If the computer turns on but Windows does not start

If Windows does not even start to load or takes too long to load, use this instruction.

4. If your computer turns on but does not boot macOS

Try starting your Mac in Safe Mode. To do this, immediately after switching on, press and hold the Shift key for a few seconds. If you have a MacBook, plug it in first.

If the computer starts up in this mode, the system can automatically fix problems preventing it from starting. Restart your device without pressing any keys and check if macOS now starts. If unsuccessful, try restoring your operating system.

5. If all else fails

If the listed tips did not help, you can contact the service center for help or try to return the computer to the store under warranty.
