1. Indiana Jones: In Search of the Lost Ark

Archeology professor Indiana Jones devotes his free time to the search for antiquities. One day he receives an important assignment from the US authorities - to find the Ark of the Covenant. But Indiana does not yet know that the Nazis are already hunting for this mysterious biblical artifact.

The franchise about a brave American archaeologist needs no special introduction, because the name Indiana Jones itself is almost synonymous with the word "adventure". The image of the hero combines masculinity, humanity and intelligence.

The first three films have long since become classics. It is a pity that the same cannot be said about the mediocre fourth.

2. Lawrence of Arabia

World War I. An employee of the British army - a young and daring Lieutenant Lawrence - did not find a common language with the general and was sent to Syria as punishment. There, having established ties with the rebel prince Faisal, Lawrence leads the guerrilla war of the Arabs against the Turks.

Sir David Lean's monumental work tells the story of a real person - Thomas Edward Lawrence, a famous British soldier and writer who participated in the Arab uprising of 1916-1918. The film received seven Oscars, universal acclaim and must-watch status.

3. Into the wild

Christopher McCandless is an unusual traveler. He was born into a prosperous family and entered a prestigious university. To live and rejoice, but Christopher preferred to get rid of his savings and go as far away from civilization as possible.

The real Chris McCandless lived in the late 80s. He became famous after the biography of the American author John Krakauer.

To avoid spoilers, let's stop here. We only note that this dramatic and delightfully beautiful film by Sean Penn more than deserved both of its Oscar nominations.

4. The Princess Bride

Rob Reiner ("Misery", "When Harry Met Sally", "Until I Played in the Box") managed to shoot a cult romantic fairy tale, in which there was a place for pirates, giants and knights. But the main decoration of the film is Robin Wright, for whom the role of a princess was one of the first in a big movie.

5. Survivor

The plot is based on the biographical novel by Michael Pahnke. American hunter Hugh Glass was badly wounded by a grizzly, and his comrades were left for dead. The main character will have to survive in complete solitude among the unexplored primeval lands of the Wild West.

Director Alejandro Iñarritu and cameraman Emmanuel Lubezki did a unique job. The result was not only a poignant, hyperrealistic and emotional film about moral choice, but also DiCaprio's long-awaited first Oscar.

In The Survivor, Iñarritu's love for long shots manifested itself, especially after Birdman, filmed without visible editing. A separate delight for moviegoers will be those who are delicate to Andrei Tarkovsky.

6. Life of Pi

The family of the Indian boy Pi, on the verge of ruin, is forced to emigrate to Canada. But the ship is wrecked. In the terrible turmoil and chaos, only Pi and the Bengal tiger survive.

A gentle and emotional story with a spicy Indian flavor. The film was presented in 11 Oscar nominations and received four of them. Be sure to watch Life of Pi for the touching script based on the novel by Yann Martel and the expressive performance of the young actor Suraj Sharma.

7. Oh, where are you, brother?

USA, Great Depression. Three convicts escape to retrieve the hidden million dollars. Only now the money is in the hut, which in a few days will be flooded due to the construction of a hydroelectric power station.

Joel and Ethan Coen's films are rightly associated with drama and brilliant black humor. "Oh, where are you, brother?" not an exception. The plot is based on Homer's "Odyssey", although the directors themselves did not read the epic and were familiar with it only thanks to various film adaptations.

8. Sherlock Holmes

England, 1890. Lord Blackwood, a lover of human sacrifice, does not allow the inhabitants of London to live in peace. Detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson catch the villain and turn them over to the authorities. The offender is executed, but after some time his body in an incomprehensible way disappears from the tomb. Holmes intends to reveal this secret, because the reputation of Watson, who personally stated the death of the warlock, is at stake.

A bouncy postmodern detective thriller. The film uses only the characters of Conan Doyle and has nothing to do with his stories - except for the mass of references and quotes that will be appreciated by book lovers.

In this version, the daring and slightly neurotic Holmes has the skills of close combat. The sequel "Sherlock Holmes: A Play of Shadows" came out no worse than the first part. The third, rumor has it ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Sets Christmas 2020 Release Date, is already in the works.

9. The incredible life of Walter Mitty

Walter Mitty works in the negative department of Life magazine and leads the boring life of the layman. He finds an outlet in the fantasy world: there he sees himself as a real hero. Mitty's monotonous existence is disturbed by photographer Sean O'Connell. The 25th frame of the film sent by him should go to the cover, but for some reason is missing in the package. Mitty goes looking for O'Connell.

This sentimental and maximalist story received conflicting reviews from critics, but the audience loved it anyway. An Incredible Life … is a great way to add an old-fashioned spirit of adventure to a boring evening. And the most diligent moviegoers can be advised to watch the film of the same name in 1947.

10. Wild

Cheryl Straid wants to cope with depression and learn to control her life. For this, she decides to walk alone along the Pacific Trail. The only problem is that Cheryl does not know anything about hiking, and this significantly complicates her path.

Nonlinear master Jean-Marc Vallee (Sharp Objects, Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club) re-uses his signature style of storytelling in Wild. The story of Straid is presented through flashbacks interspersed into the plot, thanks to which the film "holds" the viewer from beginning to end.

There was a place here for both the symbolic theme of a strong woman for Valle, and a soundtrack that I want to take to the collection immediately after watching.

11. The Sisters brothers

19th century, Wild West. Brothers thugs named Sisters must find and finish off the mysterious Ward, who invented a special method of washing gold.

An emotional western directed by French director Jacques Audiar. There is enough cruelty, humor, and sentimental male friendship. In the end, all this variety adds up to one elegant and complete adventure, at the end of which you will surely cry.

12. Mummy

The plot is based on the adventures of hunters for Egyptian treasures. Instead of gold, they find the mummy of the priest Imhotep and foolishly revive it. Now the main characters have to escape from the villain and figure out how to bring him back to the world of the dead.

This is one of the brightest representatives of the genre, full of memorable images: the treasure hunt of Hamunaptra, the setting sun, the desert, Brendan Fraser at the peak of his masculine beauty and the green eyes of Rachel Weisz …

As befits a commercially successful film, "The Mummy" has overgrown with sequels. First came the sequel titled "The Mummy Returns", then "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." The latter turned out to be a failure: the absence of the director Sommers and the popular favorite Weiss affected. The franchise made an attempt to return in 2017, but the restart with Tom Cruise was not appreciated by almost anyone.

13. Around the world in 80 days

The plot is familiar to almost everyone: Esq. Phileas Fogg makes a bet that he will travel around the world in no more than 80 days. Together with his loyal valet Passepartout, he sets off on a journey where many trials and dangers await him.

It is enough to open any book by Jules Verne to plunge into a first-class adventure. Michael Anderson's colorful production did not shame the original novel. "Around the World in 80 Days" looks a breeze, despite its venerable age.

14. Lone Ranger

The story of the adventures of the fighter against lawlessness John Reid and his assistant Indian Tonto. To the delight of local residents, they successfully fight against crime in the Wild West.

The film adaptation from Walt Disney Pictures, which is considered a failure: critics and audiences received the film coolly. Nevertheless, the picture has a chance to appeal to fans of Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp and to fans of a rich picture. At one time, "Ranger" was awarded an Oscar nomination for visual effects.

15. On the road

A screen adaptation of the pseudo-biographical novel of the same name by Jack Kerouac. Young writer Sal Paradise travels across the United States with his new friend Dean and his wife Marylou in search of freedom and himself.

The good old beat generation sets the spirit of the entire film. Sal Paradise is the pseudonym of Kerouac himself, behind the nickname Dean Moriarty is no less famous Neil Cassidy, and Old Buffalo Lee and Carlo Marks are William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, respectively.

Interestingly, Kristen Stewart got the role of Marylou thanks to her performance in the similarly atmospheric film Into the Wild. Both films need to be watched to make sure Stewart can move beyond the "twilight" role.
