Troubled times are introducing almost military equipment into the everyday wardrobe.
How Warcore appeared
Warcore (English warcore, where war - "military") is a trend in modern fashion, using elements of military style and even specialized equipment in everyday clothing.
The authorship of the term warcore belongs to Yotka S. Has Warcore Replaced Normcore in Fashion? Vogue to Vogue editor Steff Yotka. Most notably, the new style is evident in designer Virgil Abloh's debut collection for Louis Vuitton, presented in spring 2019. The costumes created by Abloh featured motifs inspired by the uniforms of modern soldiers: pockets resembling bandoliers and compartments for attachments, military belts and waist bags.
Striving to look like a military man, having nothing to do with the army, is the specificity of the Varcora. By the way, this style is not at all limited to camouflage colors, so the belt with hinged pockets can be red, and the women's coat, reminiscent of the uniform of a fighter pilot, can be blue.
If we talk about brands, then Warcor is, first of all, the Alyx brand, which even produces phone cases in a typical military style.
Varcor motives are also used by many streetwear brands. For example, Anti Social Social Club, Vetements, Off-White, Heliot Emil, A-Cold-Wall, Heron Preston, Cottweiler, Helmut Lang, Wood Wood, Acne. Style elements can be found on both Nike and Adidas' Y-3 sub-brand.
World famous fashion houses such as Dior, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel, Givenchy, Balenciaga also actively picked up the ideas of Varcor.
There are also Russian brands among the Warcoor brands. For example, Volchok and Outlaw Moscow.
Why Warcore is Gaining Popularity
According to Steff Yotka, the emergence of such a style in fashion is associated with instability and geopolitical crisis in the modern world. She assigns a special role to the growth of violence, chaos and anxiety in society. An anti-authoritarian attitude is growing among young people, the spirit of protest is becoming an increasingly characteristic feature of the time.
It is not the first time that the attributes of a military wardrobe are in use in times of crisis. For example, hippies wore army jackets to protest the Vietnam War. A prime example of the development of this idea is the shield from the Anti Social Social Club, an accessory for the modern era of protests.
At the same time, varcor is not only shocking, associated with the socio-political agenda, but also the movement of the fashion industry towards practicality, durability and comfort in clothes. Flirting with elements of the military style, where things are durable, utilitarian and there is nothing superfluous, is fully consistent with the spirit of the times. After all, it is really convenient to put on loose trousers and a jacket, in the pockets of which you can stuff all your gadgets, keys, wallet and other things. This also includes the modern craving for layering, which is also shared by the Warcor.
Popular culture also has an impact on the spread of this style. Post-apocalyptic films and video games paint a picture of a society in which elements of military equipment are widespread. People wearing Warcor seem to demonstrate their readiness for a frightening future.
What to wear in this style
Of course, in its pure form, Warcore is very specific and even freakish, but its elements can be quite successfully combined with clothes of other styles.
T-shirts and vests, as if removed from special forces soldiers, are one of the most striking features of the Varcore. At the same time, they not only look spectacular, but also allow you to stuff all the necessary things into the pockets-bandoliers and free your hands from unnecessary bags.
